BYD showed the Denza N8 EV with a CLTC range of 1,003 km. Five minutes of charging sounds like a display of power.
BYD has confirmed the electric Denza N8, a premium large 5-seater SUV with a claimed CLTC range of 1,003 km and the ability to charge from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes. The vehicle has already been submitted to China’s MIIT for homologation, so aside from marketing claims, we also have some solid figures.
For EV drivers, two things are crucial here: the battery has a capacity of 130.15 kWh, and China’s CLTC cycle is usually significantly more generous than real-world driving conditions. In other words, the specifications are strong. Very strong.
The Denza N8 is returning, but without emissions
The Denza N8 appeared in China in 2023 as a luxury mid-to-high-end SUV. At that time, it was offered as a plug-in hybrid with 6 or 7 seats and a combined CLTC range of 1,003 km with a full tank and fully charged battery.
That version failed to sell well and disappeared in less than a year. Now BYD is returning with a new approach: without an internal combustion engine, but equipped with the latest technology package, namely Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging.
The manufacturer claims it belongs to the “world’s top tier” in terms of range on electric power alone. However, it’s important to note right away one caveat: the 1,003 km figure is based on the CLTC standard, not WLTP. And that makes a difference.
130 kWh, 890 kW and charging to 97% in 9 minutes
According to MIIT documents, the Denza N8 EV is 5,150 mm long, 1,999 mm wide, and 1,820 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,075 mm. This is the size of a vehicle aimed at being higher-end than typical family SUVs and more similar to large premium models.
The most interesting aspect is the battery. The pack has a capacity of 130.15 kWh, which partially explains the claimed CLTC range of 1,003 km. Such figures can easily impress, but it’s undeniable: a large battery also comes with weight and cost.
BYD promises to charge from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes. A full charge, from 10% to 97%, should take 9 minutes. These are very aggressive figures, and we’ll need to see the actual power curves, as that’s where the magic in the slides usually ends.
The N8 EV will be available as a rear-wheel-drive or three-motor AWD version. The RWD version will have one engine with a power output of 320 kW or 370 kW. The AWD variant, built on the e3 platform, features a front engine of 270 kW and two rear engines of 310 kW each, totaling 890 kW, or about 1,193 horsepower. This is at a level where the numbers impress more than common sense.
The new electric N8 is almost identically sized to the larger hybrid Denza N8L, which BYD unveiled in June and is also equipped with Flash Charging.
For now, this applies only to China, and there is no timeline for this model entering Europe. However, if Denza aims to grow in this market, it is cars like these that will help establish its position. After that, cost, charging speed, and reliability still need to be addressed, not just the announcement itself.
