BYD will show the third Tang on August 21. It features an CLTC range of 850 km and can reach 70 percent charge in 5 minutes.

BYD officially confirmed that the previously announced “8-series Tang” is the third generation of the Tang, which will make its debut on August 21 at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show. It is a five-seater SUV with a length of 5,045 mm, a battery capacity of up to 105.792 kWh, and a claimed CLTC range of 850 km.

For Polish readers, there is one caveat: the previous BYD Tang started at 320,000 zł here, but it now seems to have been removed from the importer’s Polish lineup.

What we already know about the new BYD Tang

The new Tang has a length of 5,045 mm, a width of 1,980 mm, a height of 1,760 mm, and an axle spacing of 2,950 mm. BYD positions it as a mid-to-high-end five-seater SUV designed to complement the larger Da Tang, also known as the 9-series Tang, which was unveiled in June.

The power comes from a permanent magnet synchronous motor with 300 kW of output, equivalent to 402 horsepower. Batteries with capacities of 88.682 kWh and 105.792 kWh are available, offering ranges of 730 km, 830 km, or 850 km under China’s CLTC standard depending on the version. On paper, this seems impressive, but the CLTC test is traditionally generous.

BYD also includes the second generation Blade Battery, flash charging for fast charging, and the ADAS God’s Eye B package as standard. The most significant figure is one: charging from 10% to 70% in about 5 minutes at normal temperatures. Such claims always require a caveat, as without information on the charger’s power and the full charging curve, it remains more of a promise than a realistic scenario on the road.

The car also features DiSus-A body control system, which includes a two-chamber pneumatic suspension and a road ahead view function. This is top-tier equipment, not a budget-friendly family workhorse.

Tang needs to help boost sales

The revival of this model line isn’t out of nowhere. Sales of the Tang have plummeted significantly. In June 2026, 9,282 units were sold, representing a year-on-year decline of 48.55 percent. For the first half of the year, sales totaled 41,403 units, a 49.87 percent drop from the previous year.

BYD has been reworking its flagship Dynasty line for several months now. The larger Da Tang EV hit the market on June 17 with a starting price of 239,900 yuan, or about $35,330, and a CLTC range of up to 950 km. Before its launch, the manufacturer reported over 150,000 pre-orders. The number is impressive, but it’s only the deliveries that will show whether demand was genuine.

At the same exhibition in Chengdu, Da Han, the first flagship limousine from Dynasty’s D-segment, will also be unveiled publicly. In its electric version, it is expected to offer up to 1,008 km of CLTC range.

BYD has not yet announced the price of the new Tang, although it previously said the model would go on sale in the second half of 2026. If it ever returns to Europe, it likely won’t be cheap, as the old Tang aimed high and failed to gain widespread popularity in our market.

BYD is updating the Tang not because it can, but because it has to. What do you think? Would such a large five-seater SUV from China still make sense in Poland at a price similar to the old Tang?
