BYD ETT 44, the new electric truck (DMC = 44 tons) with a 651 kWh battery and 20-minute charging at 1.5 MW power

At the IAA Transportation 2026 exhibition, BYD announced that it would introduce its flagship tractor to the European market in 2027. The BYD ETT 44 is equipped with a 651 kWh Blade battery that can be charged at 1.5 MW. If we can find such a charger, it will take only 20 minutes to charge the battery from 20% to 80%. In other words, BYD’s European megachargers could start generating revenue through heavy transportation.

A Close Look at the BYD ETT 44

European automakers have chosen to gradually increase battery capacity: this year, Volvo began selling the 780 kWh version, while others moved to 720 kWh. The Tesla Semi remains at 548 kWh, although the manufacturer could have increased it to 822 kWh for the Semi Long Range model. BYD has not reached such high capacities yet, as its LFP cells have lower energy density compared to Li-NCM cells, so it offers an alternative approach: instead of 30 or even 50 minutes of charging to restore 60% of range, BYD claims just 20 minutes of charging adds 399 kilometers of range.

A 1.5 MW charger does not exist in Europe yet, but BYD’s 1-megawatt megachargers have already appeared in some locations. Ultimately, the vehicle can be charged via a CCS2 connector with a capacity of up to 420 kW.

The BYD electric tractor is expected to have a range of 599 kilometers and is designed for vehicles with a maximum allowable gross weight of 44 tons, with the tractor itself weighing between 10.95 and 11.14 tons depending on the configuration. There is also a version with a reduced battery of 434 kWh, offering a range of around 400 kilometers. The larger battery comes standard with a 10-year warranty or 1.2 million kilometers of driving distance coverage. The two engines on the rear axle deliver a peak power of 735 kW/1,000 HP, with a continuous power output of 546 kW/743 HP (source).

BYD, along with its tractor unit, aims to assist companies in managing the entire logistics and energy ecosystem, including energy costs, charging, efficiency, and vehicle lifecycle. The BYD ETT 44 will go on sale in 2027, and the company plans to potentially produce it on the Old Continent as well.
