BYD aims to position itself at a higher tier. The Denza Z, priced between 705,320 and 855,360 zł with a 76 kWh battery, is intended to help achieve this.

The market is becoming crowded with Chinese electric vehicles, so companies are starting to compete to stand out. BYD decided to use the Denza brand for this purpose, positioning it as high-end premium. The Denza Z9 GT turned out to be slightly underpowered and too cheap (starting at 511,700 zł), so the manufacturer introduced a more expensive model: the Denza Z, with a starting price of 705,320 zł. All this is for a battery with a capacity of 76 (~74) kWh and around 400 WLTP miles of range.

Does the Denza Z herald an even more expensive Yangwang U9?

The Denza Z is absurdly expensive – and perhaps that’s exactly the intention. The car comes in three variants (Racing, Spider, Coupe), with range figures of 380, 400, and 410 WLTP units respectively. These figures may be underestimated, as sports car manufacturers often use reduction factors to lower official numbers so that buyers understand what they’re getting and might feel a mild disappointment when driving more conservatively. After all, 400 WLTP units equate to just 342 kilometers in urban or suburban driving, 240 kilometers at 120 km/h, and 184 kilometers at 140 km/h [preliminary calculations by Elektrowozu’s editorial team].

The advantage of this model is supposed to be the use of BYD Blade II batteries with their extremely fast charging speed (10% to 70% in 5 minutes, 10% to 97% in 9 minutes). The only problem is that there is only one charger in Poland that is likely capable of maintaining the required voltage and current. We say “likely” because this technology is still new, and with new cars, compatibility between devices and the vehicle can vary. Additionally, the CCS2 connector, which has a capacity of over 500 kW, also has temperature limitations, so it might significantly reduce the charging speed after 2-3 minutes.

We’re waiting for the first tester

The battery in question has plenty to power: The Denza Z features three engines, one at the front with a power output of 500 kW/680 HP (!), and two at the back, each with 340 kW/462 HP, resulting in a total of 1,180 kW (1.18 MW)/1,604 HP and 1,240 Nm of torque despite a weight of 2.23–2.3 tons. These engines were necessary for the manufacturer to achieve a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 2.25–2.3 seconds and to reach 200 km/h in 6–6.36–6.46 seconds. The Racing version equipped with track tires (semi-slicks) reaches 100 km/h in 1.96 seconds.

The cheapest model in the range is the Denza Z Coupe, priced at 705,320 Polish zlotys. Slightly more expensive is the hardtop convertible, the Denza Z Spider, with prices starting at 782,320 Polish zlotys. The most expensive (and least comfortable; see suspension type in the table) is the Denza Z Racing, costing from 855,360 Polish zlotys. All variants are now available for order.
