Range Rover: Electrification catches up with this icon
Just a few years ago, this large, heavy, and luxurious SUV might have seemed like one of the last cars to abandon internal combustion engines. However, the market has changed rapidly. The electric Porsche Cayenne is already available in Poland, starting at 446,000 zł, with the top Turbo version delivering up to 1156 horsepower.
Mercedes offers an electric G-Class, while on September 23, Bentley will unveil the Torcal – its first mass-produced electric vehicle and a new SUV positioned below the Bentayga. The Range Rover is also already ready.
The first Range Rover without a combustion engine
The Range Rover Electric uses two permanent magnet synchronous motors, one on each axle. Each produces 260 kW, giving the entire system a maximum power of 550 horsepower and a torque of 850 Nm.
This is not a separate model built from scratch solely as an electric vehicle. It utilizes the flexible architecture used in other Range Rovers and will be produced alongside its gasoline and plug-in hybrid versions at the Solihull factory.
This allows the manufacturer to offer the same model with several powertrain options, rather than replacing the existing Range Rover with a new electric version. It’s difficult to distinguish the electric version from the gasoline one from the outside.
118.5 kWh and nearly 600 km range
A large vehicle requires a large battery. The accumulator has a capacity of 118.5 kWh and consists of 344 prismatic cells arranged in two layers. The system operates at 800 V voltage.
The maximum range according to WLTP is 599 km. JLR also provides its own figure based on real-world use – around 535 km.
During longer trips, however, the speed at which energy can be replenished may be more important. The Range Rover Electric can be charged using direct current at a power of up to 350 kW. According to the manufacturer, it takes about 22 minutes to go from 10% to 80% charge, and a 10-minute stop can increase the range by as much as 220 km WLTP.
In this regard, the new model targets similar segments to its most powerful competitors. For comparison, the electric Cayenne uses an 800 V charging system, and its maximum range — depending on the version — exceeds 600 km WLTP.
The electric version still excels off-road
The Range Rover was not intended to be merely a luxury car for city driving. The electric version retains features related to off-road capability.
The traction control system monitors engine performance every 50 milliseconds, allowing the drive to rapidly adjust torque distribution between axles. The vehicle can climb slopes up to 33 degrees and ascend gradients of 45 degrees.

There are many more technical facts worth noting. Before its launch, the prototypes covered over 1.5 million kilometers, and more than 300 patents were filed for the project — more than for any previous single model from the brand. Each vehicle also comes with a digital battery model that analyzes data from over 900 diagnostic points, while the ThermAssist system can increase range by up to 40 kilometers under suitable conditions and reduce energy consumption for heating by 40%.

Major changes have also taken place on the production side. The plant in Solihull has been adapted to assemble electric, hybrid, and internal combustion vehicles simultaneously. 9,000 workers there have acquired new skills related to electrification, while another 1,500 were trained at other JLR facilities in the West Midlands region. The first phase of modernization covered 40,000 m² of space and required over two million hours of work. Thirteen production lines for batteries and electric powertrains were built, along with 9 km of conveyors and 182 km of power and transmission cables.
Orders are already being accepted
The Range Rover Electric will be available in both short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase versions. The range will include SE, HSE, Autobiography, SV, SV Ultra, and SV Black trims. A First Edition version will also be available initially, limited to 2,500 units worldwide.
Polish prices have not been announced yet. In the UK, the base Range Rover Electric costs from 154,070 pounds, which is approximately 780,000 zł, while the First Edition starts at 157,610 pounds, around 797,000 zł. Of course, this does not mean the Polish pricing will be a simple conversion of these amounts.
Cars that not long ago seemed like the natural choice for large V8 engines are now becoming another battleground for electric powertrains. Although in this case, customers still have a choice for now. The combustion engine version remains in the lineup. Will the electric version gain popularity? It’s possible — remember that an EV powertrain provides exceptional quietness inside. This is a particularly important factor in the class of most luxurious vehicles.
