Bonus charging stations: those excluded write to the ministry

The announcement of the charging station bonus at the beginning of 2026 confused many e-drivers. During a period of heavy purchases of electric cars thanks to the eco-bonus, some thought that introducing this measure within the Automotive Fund automatically meant a bonus valid for the entire year 2026. But that’s not how it works: the bonus becomes effective only after the decree is approved. Therefore, the subsidy applies only to those who made purchases after June 26. Invoices dated earlier do not qualify for expense reimbursement. Those excluded wrote to us, but there are also those who filed formal complaints with the ministry, such as our reader Edoardo. The bad habit of last-minute rushes

Formally, everything is in order. The incentive starts from the moment the law is approved. But in a call for proposals where chronological order matters, where resources can run out, and where expenses from 2026 cannot be recovered in 2027, it is sensible to prepare in advance. The support does not cover the purchase of the device, which is a relatively quick process, but rather the installation of the charging station. Sometimes a electrician alone is not enough; a plumber is also required. Often, it is necessary to run cables for dozens of meters. Some people have their meter box in an apartment building, and the connection to the circuit breaker may be dozens of meters away; or the charging station needs to be installed in a courtyard, requiring a dedicated pit.

It takes time, especially for apartment buildings, and most importantly, electricians/installers’ schedules are often full: there’s a wait time. Those who, to be safe, waited for the announcement with all the instructions to follow — because mistakes cost money — only had a week available. If you don’t organize yourself in advance, by September 22nd, the deadline for submitting applications, you’ll arrive out of breath or not at all.

Tight deadlines are a constant negative aspect of incentive program planning. This was clearly evident with the retrofit initiative, a very complicated process involving motor replacement; the call for applications was issued in October with a deadline of December. The result? A complete failure.

The reader writes to the Ministry

The reader is named Edoardo Vella, and this is his letter to the ministry. “I wish to express my strong regret and formal protest regarding the management of the time frames for accessing and utilizing funds designated for the ‘Bonus Colonnine Domestiche’ program, which is intended for purchasing and installing charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Throughout 2025, encouraged by European and national guidelines on ecological transition and decarbonization of transportation, I installed a charging station at my home in Martellago (VE) at my own expense.”

Edoardo continues: “With the opening of subsequent offices, it has become clear that the installations carried out during 2025 remained without a specific, similar full reimbursement scheme, unlike what was provided for expenses incurred in previous years (such as 2024, which was retroactively covered by subsequent calls for proposals).

This obvious temporal discontinuity and the lack of continuous refinancing create an unjust penalty for those citizens who, trusting in the energy transition path promoted by authorities, promptly invested their private resources. Such a mechanism risks discouraging collective efforts toward sustainable mobility by creating unequal treatment based solely on the billing date of the work.

EU to China: Stop selling hybrids

Finally, the appeal: “I therefore request that this Ministry consider introducing a compensatory measure or a retroactive recovery period for those who installed and tested the devices between 2025 and June 2026, ensuring equal treatment for private citizens’ green investments.”

Alessandro’s Disappointment

Well, “I found out that only those who installed them or will install them between June and December 2026 qualify under the decree. What about those who did it earlier? Based on what do they decide that people who did it before don’t qualify? It’s such injustice.”
