BMW tests electric M3 with camouflage on Nürburgring

BMW recently began mass production of the i3 sedan in Munich. The second generation based on the “New Class” electric vehicle platform is currently available for ordering in the i3 50 xDrive First Edition version. In addition to other standard BMW-i3 models, there will also be a particularly powerful and dynamic BMW M version. The first electric M3 was recently photographed during tests on the Nürburgring.
The test vehicle seen on the racetrack already reveals a clear resemblance to the new-class i3, despite its extensive camouflage. At the same time, it’s clear that the electric M3 will stand out from its base model with a much more aggressive appearance. Compared to the M Concept Neue Klasse, which gives an insight into future design, the production version is likely to be somewhat more restrained. The concept itself draws inspiration from both BMW M’s history and the brand’s successes in motorsport.
M-Division head Frank van Meel recently described the electric i3 as the internal combustion engine’s “natural enemy.” The goal is to lure buyers away from the newly offered gasoline version by highlighting its superior dynamics. “There might be customers who say they want a combustion engine because they like the sound or appearance, or because they can’t charge at home,” said van Meel. “That’s completely fine. But if someone is passionate about racing or driving dynamics, they might say the electric M3 is the best M3.”

The technical development of the all-electric M3 relies on four electric motors. According to van Meel, the focus is not primarily on maximum power or torque, but rather on improving agility and the driving experience through precise vehicle dynamics. A central computer named “Heart of Joy” controls the four motors to achieve advantages in stability and maneuverability. By selectively braking the inner wheels and accelerating the outer wheels, the cornering behavior is optimized.
Simulated gear shifts are planned for the electric M3. The M division is also developing a new sound inspired by electric motors. Simulating power delivery and the transmission is intended to make driving more intuitive. The challenge is of a “philosophical” nature, according to van Meel, with BMW M striving to “move forward” in replicating the “feeling” and “emotion” of a combustion engine vehicle rather than directly copying its characteristics.
