The BMW i3 Touring has gone to Nürburgring. This electric station wagon will make its debut in 2027.

In October 2026, BMW is testing a slightly camouflaged prototype of the i3 Touring at Nürburgring, an electric station wagon based on the Neue Klasse platform. The model is set to hit European roads in 2027, likely equipped with the same powertrains and batteries as the sedan i3.

BMW officially confirmed the development of the station wagon earlier this year during the presentation of the i3 sedan version. The latest prototype features a black body, with camouflage limited to the front and rear. It comes equipped with 20-inch wheels, red brake calipers, and more aggressive bumpers that appear to be part of the M Sport package.

Larger trunk, but likely shorter range

The front of the i3 Touring is virtually identical to that of the sedan. However, behind the center pillar, there’s a longer roof line, new rear side windows, and a hatch that provides easier access to the trunk. The bumper and elongated rear lights retain the styling of the four-door version.

Inside, expect the same dashboard with a 17.9-inch multimedia screen, a four-spoke steering wheel, and the BMW Panoramic iDrive cockpit. The station wagon should offer more headroom for passengers in the second row and a larger trunk space. It will thus serve as a lower-cost alternative to the iX3, aimed at drivers who don’t need the elevated driving position of an SUV.

The powertrain has not been confirmed yet. The most likely scenario is adopting variants from the sedan. The BMW i3 40 xDrive has two engines, 374 horsepower, a battery with a capacity of 82.8 kWh, and a range of up to 710 km WLTP. The more powerful i3 50 xDrive delivers 469 horsepower, uses a 108.7 kWh battery, and reportedly has a range of up to 912 km WLTP.

However, such results for the station wagon are not guaranteed. The greater weight and different aerodynamics of the i3 Touring are likely to reduce its range slightly. Later on, versions with a single engine are also set to join the lineup.

A gasoline-powered BMW 3 Series Touring will also be available

The electric station wagon won’t be the only new offering from BMW in this segment. Meanwhile, the G51 generation of the 3 Series Touring is being developed, which will feature a similar body and interior but retain the gasoline-powered CLAR platform. As a result, the proportions of the two vehicles are expected to differ slightly.
