Ask grocery shoppers to demand a money-back guarantee

Ask grocery shoppers to demand a money-back guarantee

Are you considering buying a new electric car this fall? Then the Consumer Council advises you to insist on certain guarantees.

Some car importers have promised a delivery guarantee for cars ordered now but delivered after the New Year – but not all of them.

Regardless, terms and deadlines vary among car brands, models, and suppliers.

The Consumer Council is now urging consumers to demand a delivery guarantee if they order a new electric car this fall, unless the importer/dealer already offers one.

Says the industry’s standard contract is illegal

The tax threshold is as follows: In its proposed state budget, the government aims to lower the exemption limit for new electric vehicles from 300,000 kroner to 150,000 kroner starting January 1, 2027. (A full value-added tax is planned to take effect starting January 1, 2028.)

For most new car models, this means the price will increase by 37,500 kroner at the turn of the year once the tax threshold is reduced.

The Consumer Council believes the standard terms used by the automotive industry are illegal because they shift all the risk of higher costs to car buyers, and they have filed complaints about these terms with the Consumer Ombudsman.

"The clause that gives companies the right to pass on all costs due to increased tax rates, even when the car is delivered late, is clearly unreasonable and, in our view, illegal," says Thomas Iversen, head of the Consumer Council, in a press release.

This must also have been confirmed by the Consumer Ombudsman, who is in talks with Norway’s automobile industry association about the need to change the standard agreements.

  • It’s time for an update, and we expect a new standard agreement with revised terms that provide greater predictability and protection for consumer rights, says Thomas Iversen.
  • It must be clearly stated when and why prices can increase. If delivery of the car is delayed and new fees are introduced in the meantime, invoices should not be sent to the consumer.
  • Many car brands have options to choose from

Until a new standard agreement is in place, the Consumer Council believes car buyers should request a price guarantee from the dealer if they order a new electric vehicle in the fall, and they should demand that any delays not result in higher prices.

And if the car dealer doesn’t meet you on this point, Iversen reminds that there are many fish in the sea, or at least something along those lines:

– There are too many car brands to choose from, and competition in the new car market is fierce. So the terms should be favorable to compete on price and predictability.
