The new all-electric Torcal is set to become the most powerful and fastest-accelerating production model in Bentley’s history. The performance of this brand’s first all-electric vehicle is designed to remain within comfort limits while meeting customer demands. Bentley emphasizes not only the performance figures but also the effortless way in which the vehicle achieves them.
Bentley has combined its performance philosophy for over a century with ample power reserves and a refined, confident delivery of that power, it is said. The brand’s grand tourers are described as having the ability to cover long distances with ease. Bentley notes that previous engines, from the 4½-liter blower and Speed Six to the 6.75-liter V8 and the twin-turbocharged W12, share one key feature: abundant torque whenever the driver demands it.
The Torcal is designed to build upon this principle with its electric drive. The manufacturer states, “The immediate response of the electric drive elevates Bentley’s renowned performance philosophy to a completely new level, delivering seamless, uninterrupted acceleration from the first touch of the accelerator pedal. The result is a relentless yet wonderfully refined power surge that feels both exhilarating and intuitive.”
All elements of the Torcal, according to Volkswagen’s luxury subsidiary, are engineered to maintain Bentley’s signature balance of luxury and performance. Whether accelerating from a standstill or overtaking, the electric vehicle is meant to respond instantly. The Torcal responds “with an immediacy that feels natural, soothing, and unmistakably Bentley,” say the Britons.
The technical foundation, similar to the sibling model Porsche Cayenne Electric, is Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE). Thus, the electric Bentley also features a 113 kilowatt-hour battery pack. This is said to deliver an WLTP range of over 600 kilometers. It can be charged at a maximum rate of 400 kW, allowing the batteries to go from 10% to 80% charge in less than 20 minutes. The power output of this roughly 2.7-ton electric vehicle is 653 kW/888 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under three seconds.
Instead of filling the silence of the electric drive with synthetic engine noises or amplifying electric motor sounds, Bentley’s E-SUV relies on an “orchestral” sound landscape. This is achieved using recordings of real instruments that are shaped by the driver’s inputs. The inspiration for this sound comes from the manufacturer’s history, ranging from the powerful engines of the 1930s to the W12 engine. The brand has not yet announced a price for the Torcal.
