Audi will have a response to the Tesla Model 3, BMW i3, and Mercedes C-Class by 2028. The Audi A4 e-tron based on SSP

The Audi A4 e-tron, the manufacturer’s first electric non-SUV in the D segment, will not arrive until 2028 — 11 years after Tesla’s Model 3 hit the market and two years after the BMW i3 made its debut. It will be built on a completely new SSP platform, allowing it to surpass the VW ID. Golf, which is set to go on sale around the beginning of next decade. The new Audi A4 e-tron will be designed according to the Radical Next principle.

The Audi A4 e-tron will also be available as the Audi A4 e-tron Avant, although “no one wants a station wagon.”

The SSP platform was conceived by former Volkswagen Group chairman Herbert Diess after he learned that the group’s brands not only developed combustion engine solutions from scratch (VW e-Up, VW e-Golf, Audi e-tron) but also worked separately on their own platforms (Volkswagen: MEB, Porsche: J1, Audi: PPE). In a more structured world of internal combustion engines, such an approach might have made sense. Faced with increasing competition and the different designs of electric vehicles, Diess proposed a universal platform for all, designed to handle high voltages — namely SSP.

Unfortunately, due to the scope of the work (mechanics, electronics, software) and the company’s ongoing issues with software, the launch of the platform has been delayed. We recently heard that it will be introduced to the market by the new Volkswagen ID. Golf at the beginning of next decade. However, Audi has not changed its plans. In a statement to the Australian website GoAuto, Audi’s technical director reiterated his claim that the Audi A4 e-tron will hit the market by the end of 2028, earlier than the ID. Golf.

The electric Audi A4 is set to be one of the first production models on SSP, featuring an 800 V architecture, advanced software deeply integrated with the car’s controllers, and entirely new batteries likely based on PowerCo cells. The vehicle is also expected to offer a redesigned exterior and an updated interior, which, given the German automakers’ willingness to cater to Chinese tastes, means a large number of screens, a digital assistant, various gadgets, and possibly a creatively adapted dashboard display (compare to the BMW iX3).

The Audi A4 e-tron will be available in an Avant version, although, according to Mercedes’ chief designer, no one buys station wagons anymore. Americans have rejected this body style, Chinese consumers don’t understand it at all, leaving only Europe. For them, it’s obviously not profitable, as there are SUVs and crossovers that allow for higher margins.
