The battery recall campaign for VW ID. also includes Audi. Tens of thousands of Q4 e-trons with SK On cells, mainly in the US

Our readers tell us that their VW ID. series vehicles have just started charging to 80 percent capacity, while Volkswagen Group has expanded the battery repair campaign to another brand: Audi, according to Electrive. Potential issues with cells may arise mainly in the United States, where 9,048 vehicles will be sent for repairs. The number is lower in other markets—there are reportedly 3,700 Audi Q4 e-tron models in all body styles affected, all using SK On cells.

The Audi Q4 e-tron may also have battery problems. We’re just waiting for Skoda now

Preliminary reports indicated that manufacturing defects in the Li-ion cell supplier, which in extreme cases could lead to overheating or fire risks in batteries, primarily affected Volkswagen vehicles from the ID series (both in Europe and the US) as well as the Cupra models, which are based on the MEB platform — but not Audi or Skoda vehicles, let alone Ford models. The situation regarding Ford vehicles is not entirely clear, while it was reported that Audi and Skoda models did not use the problematic SK On cells.

We now know that Audi is also at risk, although the issue affects only a small number of units. In total, this amounts to about 12,700 vehicles from the Q4 e-tron model lines for model years 2024 and 2025, with the United States focusing on cars produced between December 4, 2023, and April 24, 2025 (Q4 e-tron), or between November 30, 2023, and April 22, 2025 (Q4 Sportback e-tron). Since the American market is supplied by the same factory in Zwickau, Germany, the timeframes for Europe are similar — Germany’s KBA has identified dates ranging from November 30, 2023, to June 26, 2025.

Based on the numbers and proportions, Elektrowozu’s editorial team concludes that on the Old Continent we are dealing with leftover units from production, as the issue primarily affects the United States. Audi has already launched a “voluntary recall” in America, under which it plans to inspect vehicles with batteries from a specific batch produced at a factory in Hungary. So far, no incidents caused directly by defective batteries have been reported. Therefore, in a previous article we suggested taking a calm approach to the issue and planning routes carefully in case the vehicle suddenly starts charging only to 80 percent.
