ADAC Survey: How Satisfied Are Electric Car Drivers?

An increasing number of people in Germany are driving electric vehicles. In a recent survey, ADAC questioned over 1000 electric car owners about their experiences. The survey focused on satisfaction with their own vehicles but also covered the charging infrastructure in Germany.
In summary, it appears that those who drive electric vehicles are generally satisfied with their experience. 97 percent of respondents said they were satisfied or even very satisfied with using their electric cars. For just under three-quarters of all respondents, the current vehicle is the first electric car in their family. Over 90 percent of those who switched from another type of vehicle to an electric car as their first vehicle described the transition as easy or very easy.
Most drivers are also satisfied with their vehicle’s range. However, differences in range under warm and cold temperatures, as well as the gap between the manufacturer’s claimed range and the actual range, were considered areas that need improvement.
Charging remains a challenge for many
Regarding questions about charging infrastructure, the feedback was mixed. Overall, nearly two-thirds of users of public charging stations are satisfied or very satisfied with the public charging infrastructure in Germany. However, there is criticism regarding the level and transparency of charging prices, with about one in four considering them in need of improvement. Public charging is most commonly paid for using a smartphone app and/or a charging card.
More than one-third of those who charge publicly have also paid directly at the charging station using a bank or credit card. If the price were the same for every payment method, about one in four would prefer to pay using an app or a bank/credit card. Only one in five would still favor a provider’s charging card.
When it comes to plan selection, most users (42%) choose “ad hoc” plans, meaning without a fixed contract, while 40% use plans without a monthly fee. 14% said they have signed up for plans with a monthly fee.
Safety at charging stations gains more attention
Another topic in the ADAC survey was safety at public charging stations at night. Although overall satisfaction with station safety is high, 56% of users of public charging stations and 67% of female users said they change their charging habits at night for safety reasons. This could mean they avoid public charging altogether at night, steer clear of certain parking lots, or only charge at night when they are not alone.
According to the respondents, two main factors can contribute to an improved sense of security: Over 60 percent prefer better lighting or video surveillance at charging stations, while among women, nearly half also want on-site staff or a better location.
From ADAC’s perspective, the results show that switching to an electric car generally goes smoothly, with drivers satisfied with their decision. At the same time, the results also highlight that charging infrastructure needs to become more user-friendly, cheaper, and transparent. Safety cannot be overlooked either: Many charging stations are located away from rest areas, so operators could already create a more pleasant atmosphere with proper lighting.
