960 km of range, 130 kWh battery capacity, and fast charging in 9 minutes: the Denza N8L arrives ready to dominate

BYD continues to apply its battery and fast-charging technology to increasingly larger models. Its premium brand, Denza, has just launched the N8L in China — a massive six-seater SUV that combines a 130 kWh battery with an 800-volt architecture to ensure long driving ranges without worry, along with the ability to make quick stops to keep moving.

A 5.2-meter SUV with a huge battery and ultra-fast charging

The Denza N8L is a large-scale F-SUV with ambitious features. It measures 5.20 meters in length, 1.99 meters in width, and 1.82 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 3,075 mm. Thus, it is a vehicle of considerable size, featuring an interior layout with six seats arranged in 2+2+2 configuration, independent seats in the second row, and a third row that can move longitudinally.

The exterior design remains largely unchanged compared to the rest of the N8L range. The electric version features a closed front end, flush door handles, and a LiDAR mounted on the roof. Denza has also introduced three specific colors for this version: Golden Black, Winter Green, and Sunset Ink.

The absence of a combustion engine allows for a very unique use of the front space. The N8L electric model comes with a 208-liter front trunk that opens electronically and has a drainage outlet to clean it with water. This is a solution specifically designed for carrying leisure equipment, beach gear, or outdoor items without having to worry too much about dirt.

Inside the cabin, Denza features a tech-heavy setup with six interconnected screens. This includes the dashboard, central display, passenger screen, two rear screens, an augmented reality head-up display on the windshield, and a camera-based interior mirror.

It also introduces BYD’s artificial intelligence assistant DiClaw, which can understand complex multi-step commands and perform tasks such as planning trips or controlling home devices. For driving assistance features, the N8L comes equipped with the God’s Eye 5.0 system, featuring a LiDAR, five millimeter-wave radars, twelve ultrasonic radars, and twelve cameras.

The major innovation, however, lies in the propulsion system. The Denza N8L electric vehicle uses a single electric motor located above the rear axle, with a maximum power of 370 kW, equivalent to around 503 horsepower. This rear-wheel drive configuration contrasts with the three-motor system used in its plug-in hybrid version. The production model also achieves a top speed of 240 km/h.

The energy comes from a 130 kWh battery based on BYD’s second-generation Blade technology. With this, Denza claims a range of 960 kilometers according to the CLTC cycle, a figure we can estimate at around 835 kilometers under WLTP standards.

The battery is especially large even for an SUV of this size. The Denza N8L electric vehicle also weighs over three tons, with a curb weight of around 3,110 kg, so it’s particularly remarkable that it manages to achieve a certified range of nearly 1,000 kilometers. The Denza N8, which uses the same battery, reaches up to 1,003 kilometers under CLTC conditions thanks to its slightly shorter body structure.

And here comes one of the most striking figures from the new model. The N8L electric vehicle uses an 800-volt architecture and can go from 10% to 97% charge in approximately 9 minutes, according to BYD’s data for this fast-charging technology. This indicates a charging curve that is almost flat.

The price is also interesting because the N8L electric vehicle enters the Chinese market at a lower cost than the original plug-in hybrid version. The standard version costs 299,800 yuan, around 38,700 euros, while the higher-end version is priced at 329,800 yuan, approximately 42,600 euros at the current exchange rate. These are prices in China and therefore cannot directly indicate a potential European price, especially considering taxes, shipping costs, and Denza’s positioning in our market.

Denza’s launch also makes considerable sense within BYD’s strategy. The manufacturer already offers the N8L as a plug-in hybrid, and now it adds an electric version capable of competing in the Chinese market against larger models such as the NIO ES8 or Aito M9. With a length of 5.2 meters, six seats, a 130 kWh battery, and charging that can be completed in just minutes, the electric N8L well illustrates how far China’s automakers have progressed in terms of technology.
