845 km of range and starting at 13,800 euros: MG 07 prepares a family version aimed at dominating the market

MG is preparing a new version of one of its most interesting models in China. The MG 07, which has just begun its commercial journey with a fastback sedan, will also come in a family version—a configuration that retains much of the original model’s design while offering a more practical rear end.

The first images of this variant already show a fairly advanced car, still camouflaged during road tests. The main uncertainties now are when it will officially hit the market and, most importantly, which parts of the MG 07’s mechanical and technological lineup will be carried over to this new body style. The brand has not yet confirmed all these details.

The MG 07 family car is not just a prototype that appeared out of nowhere. The first patent images of this version were released over the summer by China’s National Intellectual Property Administration, showing a body with an extended roof and a much more vertical rear end. Now, photos taken during testing confirm that MG has moved the design to a much more advanced development stage.

The front end retains almost unchanged the styling of the sedan version. The dual C-shaped headlights can be seen, along with a hood and windshield that appear to come straight from the MG 07 already sold in China. The seven-spoke two-tone tires used on some sedan versions are also present, although different black-colored tires have been seen in other prototype images.

The significant change starts from pillar B. The roof extends toward the rear and maintains a considerable height for longer, a typical feature of family vehicles that helps create more space for rear passengers and likely increases cargo capacity. At the back, there is also a spoiler above the trunk lid, a rear windshield wiper, and a horizontal light strip that runs along most of the rear section.

There is another particularly interesting detail in the latest test units: a LiDAR sensor installed on the roof. This suggests that the MG 07 family model might also be equipped with the driving assistance system developed for the Momenta R7 platform, a technology already available in certain versions of the sedan.

The presence of LiDAR is especially noteworthy because the MG 07 has already become one of the most affordable models with this technology in the Chinese market. Versions fitted with this system use Momenta’s R7 perception model along with an X7 chip designed for advanced driving assistance functions.

The sedan has already received over 42,000 orders

To understand the potential of this new model, one must look at what’s happening with the original MG 07. The sedan was officially unveiled on August 21 and managed to secure over 10,000 confirmed orders in just 1 minute and 57 seconds. Twenty days later, MG announced that it had already received more than 42,000 orders in China.

The current price range starts at 108,900 yuan, approximately 14,200 euros, and goes up to 159,900 yuan, around 20,900 euros, based on the current exchange rate. Additionally, during the launch campaign, promotional prices as low as 105,900 yuan, roughly 13,800 euros, were offered.

For the electric versions, the MG 07 comes in different configurations. The 610 and 650 kilometer CLTC variants use a 400-volt system with a 67 kWh battery supplied by Qingtao. In the 650 kilometer CLTC version, our estimate suggests a WLTP range of around 566 kilometers, while the 610 kilometer CLTC variants would have a WLTP range of approximately 531 kilometers.

At the top is the version with the longest range, which features an 800-volt architecture, a 235 kW front motor, and a 91 kWh battery manufactured by CATL. Its 845 kilometers of CLTC range translates, according to our estimates, to around 735 kilometers under WLTP standards. Additionally, it supports 5C fast charging.

This version delivers 315 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. It is precisely this configuration that makes the MG 07 a particularly compelling electric sedan in China due to its balance of range, performance, and price.

For now, MG has not confirmed that the upcoming model will retain exactly these same specifications. Available information suggests the new body style might offer the same plug-in hybrid and electric configurations, including 400 and 800 volt architectures, though an official confirmation from the brand is still pending.

It is also not confirmed whether the MG 07 family model will receive a four-wheel-drive version. The sedan currently available in China is exclusively front-wheel-driven, while the possibility of adding a second electric motor to the family model remains open. Therefore, any specific figures regarding power, range, or performance for this body style should be considered provisional until MG releases its final details.

What is clear, however, is that MG wants to leverage the commercial success of the 07 to expand its lineup. The brand has already confirmed that the model will be available in international markets, though it has not yet been specified when this new body style will arrive or whether it will be available in Europe.
