700 km range and 800 V charging: Changan launches a best-selling model set to arrive in Europe

700 km range and 800 V charging: Changan launches a best-selling model set to arrive in Europe

The new Changan Nevo Q06 has been on sale in China for just a couple of days and has already caught attention in one of the world’s most competitive markets. The model comes with a wide range of options, an especially ambitious technological approach, and is designed to be a global model, meaning it will also arrive in Europe to expand the brand’s lineup there.

The brand announced that the Changan Nevo Q06 received 35,000 orders in its first 24 hours on the Chinese market since sales began on September 23. It’s important to note that these are orders, not cars delivered to customers, but they give an idea of the initial interest the new model has generated.

This figure is particularly striking when compared to the BYD Song Ultra. The latter received 37,216 orders in its first week on sale in China, while the Q06 only needed one day to come close to that figure. The new Changan model is positioned as one of its direct competitors in the Chinese market.

A 4.84-meter SUV with up to 443 HP

The exterior design of the Changan Nevo Q06 was created by Klaus Zyciora, former head of design at Volkswagen Group and current vice president of design at Changan. The SUV features smooth-shaped body panels, prominent wheel arches, a closed front end with split lighting, partially integrated door handles, and a light strip running along the rear. It measures 4.83 meters in length, 1.97 meters in width, and 1.67 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 2,940 mm.

Inside, Changan has opted for a technology-driven approach while not completely eliminating physical controls. The main feature is a 15.6-inch central screen, accompanied by a small screen for the driver, an information projection system on the windshield, a wireless charger, and a gear selector located behind the steering wheel. The cabin also offers front seats with zero-gravity functionality and rear seats with electric reclining up to 145 degrees and massage features.

The equipment can go much further. The Q06 features a retractable screen for the rear passengers and a 9.5-liter integrated fridge, while the trunk offers 782 liters of capacity and can reach 2,200 liters with the rear seats folded down. Electric versions also add a second front loading space of 196 liters, a solution that allows for better use of the model’s nearly five meters in length.

In terms of driving assistance, the Changan Nevo Q06 can be equipped with a particularly advanced system. This suite includes a 256-line LiDAR sensor mounted on the roof, eleven cameras, and three millimeter-wave radars, along with a processor capable of up to 560 TOPS of computing power. Its functions include the ability to automatically stop the car at speeds up to 135 km/h and an automatic emergency steering system for speeds between 60 and 120 km/h.

The mechanical range is one of the main strengths of the Q06. In its electric configuration, the model features an engine mounted on the rear axle with 225 kW (302 HP), paired with a 66 kWh battery. A higher-powered version comes with 245 kW (329 HP) and an 80 kWh battery, while the most powerful variant uses two engines on the rear axle to deliver 330 kW, equivalent to 443 HP. This top model can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

The battery uses LFP chemistry, and the range varies depending on the version. For the electric models currently on the market, the main capacities are 66 and 80 kWh, with certified ranges of 602, 700, and 670 kilometers under the Chinese CLTC cycle. The 443 HP version, on the other hand, claims a 670-kilometer CLTC range due to the characteristics of its propulsion system and higher power output.

Changan Nevo Q06 Range

The CLTC figures are more optimistic than those obtained under the WLTP cycle used in Europe. In this case, we also have a much more precise reference: the figures published for the Q06 show ranges of 602 and 700 kilometers on a CLTC basis.

Based on our estimation, using the standard conversion between the two cycles, the versions with 602, 700, and 670 kilometers of CLTC range would correspond approximately to 530, 610, and 590 kilometers respectively.

Another strength of the Changan Nevo Q06 is its 800-volt electric system with 6C charging capability. The brand claims it can go from 30% to 80% charge in just nine minutes on compatible configurations, a figure that places this model in a category previously reserved for electric cars with significantly higher prices.

The range is completed by a Q06 EREV, that is, an electric vehicle with an extended-range option. This version uses a 28.39 kWh battery and two electric motors that together produce 270 kW, equivalent to 362 horsepower. A 1.5-liter gasoline engine acts as a generator to produce electricity, while the certified electric range reaches 200 kilometers under CLTC standards, equivalent to 164 kilometers under WLTP standards according to the published data.

The system allows for a claimed combined range of up to 1,600 kilometers, a figure that should be interpreted differently from that of a conventional electric car, as it includes the operation of the gasoline generator. In this case, the main advantage lies in having a battery large enough to cover most daily trips without using the internal combustion engine, while also providing an additional reserve for long journeys.

As for the price, many would likely expect much higher figures. The Changan Nevo Q06 starts at just 139,900 yuan in China, which is approximately 18,275 euros at current exchange rates, rising to 169,900 yuan for the most expensive version, around 22,000 euros.

The conclusion is that with the Q06, Changan has gone all in, and on paper it appears to be an extremely competitive car. It remains to be seen how well it performs in the transition from China to Europe.
