€600 million for Renault’s Spanish production sites

French automaker Renault has announced plans to invest a total of €600 million by 2030 to modernize its Spanish plants in Valladolid and Palencia. Five new models, including two EVs, will be produced there. Additionally, a battery assembly line will be established in Valladolid.

The recently announced investment in Renault’s Spanish plants clearly reflects plans leaked in March for future plant utilisation. At that time, a high-ranking Renault manager confirmed that three new models were planned for the Palencia plant, including two all-electric models and a range-extender version. According to a media report at the time, these were to include the second generation of the Scenic E-Tech Electric, the all-electric successor to the Rafale, and a range-extender version of the Scénic.

While Renault Spain does not name the models in its current press release, the details align: the statement confirms that the Valladolid and Palencia plants will produce five new models under the futuREady strategy plan, including two C-segment electric vehicles. Additionally, the bodywork plant in Valladolid will also receive a new battery assembly line.

Deploying the new RGEV Medium 2.0 platform

At the same time, the company confirms that the new electric models will be based on the new RGEV Medium 2.0 platform. Unlike Renault’s current EV platforms, the RGEV Medium 2.0 features an 800-volt architecture, designed to underpin vehicles from the B+ to D segments. According to the French manufacturer, the platform will be so flexible that it supports all body styles – from sedans and SUVs to vans and MPVs.

Renault highlights the RGEV Medium 2.0’s WLTP range of up to 750 km, as well as up to 1,400 km in vehicles with a range extender. Additionally, fast-charging times of just 10 minutes are said to be possible.

Returning to the investment sum of €600 million: this comprises Renault Group’s own funds as well as national and regional subsidies for industrial transformation and sustainable mobility. The investment is supported by the Spanish government and the regional government of Castile and León. The funds are intended to improve the competitiveness of the Valladolid and Palencia plants, accelerate the development of cutting-edge technologies, and support the transformation of business activities across the country. The announcement follows the signing of a collective bargaining agreement through 2028, securing 6,000 jobs at Renault’s Spanish sites.

“Spain is a strategically important location for the Group, not only in terms of production and distribution but also because of the ecosystem surrounding our core business, which includes suppliers of components, energy, and mobility. In these turbulent times for the industry, the Renault Group is demonstrating its commitment to the Spanish plants and the continuity of our business activities—thanks to the expertise of our teams, the social agreement, and the support of the institutions. Our goal is to remain a leading manufacturer in Spain and at the European level,” says Christian Stein, CEO of Renault Group Spain.

BEV production focused in France

Renault initially focused its electric vehicle production in France, starting with the series production of the Zoe in 2012 in Flins. Later, the focus shifted to the ElectriCity centre in the north of the country. In Douai, the Mégane E-Tech has been rolling off the production line since 2021, joined more recently by the Scénic E-Tech, the Renault 5 E-Tech, and the Alpine A290. In neighbouring Maubeuge, the electric Kangoo has been built since 2011, and the Renault 4 E-Tech since 2025.

Meanwhile, Renault is expanding its EV production beyond France: in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, production of the first Twingo Electric began in 2020, and in 2026, the new Twingo E-Tech Electric will be produced there. With the now-announced €600 million investment in Spain, another country is being added to Renault’s EV production network.
