326 KM and rear-wheel drive. Volkswagen has never had a “sports car” like this!

326 KM and rear-wheel drive. Volkswagen has never had a “sports car” like this!

In short:

Volkswagen has attached a GTI badge to the electric ID.3

Result? 326 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, and even a range of 601 km

This is the most powerful production GTI in the brand’s history. But not the fastest!

The battery-powered hatchback reaches 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds

The manufacturer’s Golf GTI Edition 50 reaches 100 km/h 0.3 seconds faster

Volkswagen is close to a production version

For half a century, GTI in Volkswagen has primarily referred to a compact hatchback with a gasoline engine and front-wheel drive. The ID.3 GTI breaks both of these conventions at once. It is electric, and the 326 horsepower goes exclusively to the rear wheels.

The car shown here is still referred to by Volkswagen as a model close to the production version. It is set to hit the market in the first quarter of 2027, where it will take over as the most powerful production GTI in the brand’s 50-year history.

One horsepower stronger than the Golf

The ID.3 GTI delivers 326 horsepower and 545 Nm of torque available from a standstill. Thanks to Launch Control, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h.

In terms of power, the new electric vehicle slightly outperforms the Golf GTI Edition 50. The anniversary Golf has 325 horsepower and was previously the most powerful production GTI from Volkswagen.

This doesn’t mean the electric car is faster, though. The Golf GTI Edition 50 takes 5.3 seconds to reach 100 km/h and can go up to 270 km/h. The ID.3 GTI thus has 1 more horsepower, but it’s 0.3 seconds slower to reach 100 km/h.

A significant difference also exists in the powertrain. The Golf remains true to front-wheel drive, while the engine in the ID.3 GTI is located at the back and drives the rear wheels. This configuration has not been used in a production GTI before.

79 kWh and over 600 km range

The sporty version doesn’t come with a small battery optimized solely for performance. It has a 79 kWh usable capacity, and Volkswagen claims a WLTP range of up to 601 km.

This is currently a projected value before final homologation. Similarly, the claimed energy consumption of 14.5 kWh/100 km is also preliminary.

The maximum DC charging power is 183 kW. According to the manufacturer, charging the battery from 10% to 80% should take about 29 minutes.

The ID.3 GTI will also feature V2L functionality. With the appropriate adapter, external devices can be powered from the car, such as charging electric bikes.

The GTI is supposed to differ from the regular ID.3 in more than just power

Volkswagen didn’t stop at changing the engine software and adding red badges. The ID.3 GTI comes with a separately tuned DCC adaptive suspension, a progressive steering system, and a special GTI mode.

When activated, it changes the engine response, steering setup, and suspension characteristics. At the same time, Launch Control can be enabled, the interior lighting turns red, and the digital displays switch to a sport mode. Volkswagen has also opted for an electronically generated sound of a combustion engine.

The ID.3 GTI is based on the updated ID.3 Neo. It measures 4290 mm in length, 1809 mm in width, 1560 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2764 mm.

Volkswagen adopts classic GTI elements

The car is shown in Tornado Red paint, famously associated with older Volkswagen sports models. A distinctive red strip runs across the front between the headlights, and the lower air intake features a honeycomb pattern.

The standard 20-inch wheels are named Wörthersee, after a location that has been one of the most important gathering spots for GTI fans over the years. This time, the roof and rear of the body are painted in the same color as the chassis, whereas the ID.3 GTX used more black elements.

There are also obvious references to GTI history inside. The sporty seats feature a new interpretation of the checkered pattern known from the original Golf GTI, with a red 12 o’clock marker on the steering wheel and an illuminated button at its bottom to activate GTI mode.

Traditional buttons return inside as well

The ID.3 GTI uses a new cabin developed for the updated ID.3. The central multimedia screen is 12.9 inches, but Volkswagen moves away partially from the idea of controlling almost everything via the touch display.

A separate control panel for the air conditioning and hazard lights appeared below the screen. The center console also featured a classic knob for adjusting volume and switching tracks.

The options list includes items such as a panoramic roof, 360-degree cameras, an augmented reality head-up display, Harman Kardon speakers, and sporty seats with memory functions and massage capabilities.

GTI Enters the Electric Era

The ID.3 won’t be the only electric Volkswagen model bearing the three-letter GTI designation. The brand has already introduced a smaller version, the ID. Polo GTI. It’s clear that Volkswagen is abandoning the use of GTX as the electric counterpart to its classic sporty models and returning to a much more recognizable name.

The change with the ID.3 is particularly interesting because it doesn’t simply try to recreate a Golf GTI in electric form. It has more power, significantly higher torque, and — for the first time in GTI history — rear-wheel drive.

European sales will begin in the first quarter of 2027. Volkswagen hasn’t announced a price yet. And it’s the price that could prove crucial, as the ID.3 GTI will need to convince not only customers looking for a fast electric car but also fans of one of the most recognizable sports brands in automotive history.

The closest rival to the ID.3 GTI will be the CUPRA Born VZ, which is technically very closely related to Volkswagen. It has exactly 326 KM and 545 Nm of torque, rear-wheel drive, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Other competitors include more radical electric hot hatches, such as the MG4 XPower with all-wheel drive, while models like the Alpine A290 with up to 220 KM of power and the Abarth 600e occupy a slightly lower price segment. Thus, the ID.3 GTI is aimed at a relatively niche but growing group of sports electric cars that are designed to be fast not only on straight roads but also to offer greater driving pleasure.
