1,650 km of range: BYD’s best hybrid SUV now available for just 29,500 €

BYD already dominates Spain’s plug-in hybrid SUV segment with the BYD Atto 2 DM-i — read our review — and its larger sibling, the BYD Seal U DM-i — we drove it — which is a bestseller in Europe.
Now BYD is further enhancing these plug-in hybrid SUVs with the launch in China of the BYD Sealion 08, a massive SUV measuring 5.11 meters with a range of up to 1,650 km, now available starting at 229,900 yuan, or equivalent to 29,500 euros.
BYD’s best hybrid SUV: PHEV or electric with up to 1,650 km of range
Part of BYD’s Ocean lineup in the Chinese market, BYD’s new and improved plug-in hybrid SUV can be considered the all-terrain version of the recent BYD Seal 08, offering a range of over 1,650 kilometers—specifically, 1,660 kilometers—outperforming its SUV sibling.
Of course, this 1,650-kilometer range, which BYD is selling in China for around 29,500 euros, is available in its PHEV version, but it’s not the only option, as a 100% electric version is also available.
This SUV, with a length of 5.11 meters and a wheelbase of 3.05 meters, is offered in China in 5-seater and 6-seater versions—the latter being the preferred configuration for luxury SUVs in China, as opposed to 7-seater versions like those planned for Xpeng’s luxury SUVs in Spain. It also comes in various powertrain options.
The first two are electric. One features a rear motor with 370 kW / 503 HP, while the other has two motors—one per axle for all-wheel drive—consisting of a front motor with 292 HP and the aforementioned rear motor with 503 HP, for a total of 784 HP. They share a massive battery of 115 kWh that weighs as much as 810 kg, and they offer ranges of 900 and 800 km respectively; all figures are based on China’s CLTC testing cycle.
But it’s the plug-in hybrid versions that are the most interesting. They share a 1.5T internal combustion engine producing 115 kW / 156 hp, with the single-motor version adding an electric motor delivering 200 kW / 272 hp, and the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version including another front motor with 272 hp as well. Similar to the electric version of this BYD SUV, they all use a 55 kWh battery, offering an electric range of either 350 km or 400 km depending on the version. The best part? In its single-electric-motor version, the new BYD SUV achieves a range of up to 1,650 km.
Equipment and possible arrival in Spain
If we say that this SUV, available starting at 29,500 euros, is the best from BYD, it’s not only because of its technology but also due to its features. All versions of this SUV come standard equipped with BYD’s DiSus-A air suspension and the brand’s God’S Eye driving assistance system. It also features a steerable rear axle, allowing it to achieve a minimum turning radius of just 4.95 meters.
Inside, it boasts a 17.3-inch central screen and a HUD system that projects data onto the windshield, equivalent to 26 inches; meanwhile, the rear passengers will have access to a 21.4-inch screen that unfolds from the ceiling.
Chinese media are already suggesting that this plug-in hybrid SUV could be exported outside China by the end of this year, or rather throughout 2027. By that time it might reach Europe. In this regard, several European industry outlets have indicated it could arrive in the markets of the Old Continent—including Spain—under the name Atto 8 as a successor to the current BYD Tang available in our country. However, its price would double or even increase further if it reaches Spain.
