1,100 km of range, 890 kW power, 9-minute fast charging, and starting at 41,300 euros: this is the impressive Denza Z9S

The Denza Z9S is about to take another step forward in China. The electric sedan from the BYD-owned brand will officially hit the market on September 23, following its pre-order launch last August. With a five-meter long body, up to three electric motors, and an announced range of 1,100 kilometers, the Z9S aims to combine sports car performance with a cruising capability that was until recently reserved for much more expensive models.

The new Denza Z9S is smaller in size than the Denza Z9, yet still retains a substantial presence. It measures 5.09 meters in length, 1.98 meters in width, and 1.49 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 3,025 mm. The design follows the philosophy of the Z series, featuring a coupe-style sedan silhouette, a sloping roof, and a relatively clean side line. At the front, it introduces split headlight units with an upper lighting strip and the main headlights positioned at the ends of the bumper.

The front end also features several bold lines across the hood and a lower section with a distinctly sporty appearance. A lidar sensor is mounted on the roof, integrated into the assembly for driving assistance systems. At the rear, we find elongated headlights, a redesigned bumper, and an active electric rear spoiler. The Denza Z9S will also offer seven exterior colors, including purple, green, gray, black, silver, and blue.

Another distinctive feature is the magnetic system located in front of the passenger, which allows for the placement of various accessories such as a tablet, headphones, a small refrigerator, a glasses holder, or even photographs. On the second row, there is also a 7-inch screen through which functions like the air conditioning, curtains, music, rear seats, and ambient lighting can be controlled.

In terms of technology, the Denza Z9S features the DiPilot system along with a lidar mounted on the roof. This system provides assistance for driving in urban and highway conditions, as well as automated parking in various scenarios. As usual, these functions are driving assistance systems that require the driver to maintain control and oversight of the vehicle.

The most impressive aspect, however, lies beneath the chassis. The Denza Z9S will be available with a rear electric motor delivering up to 370 kW, as well as a three-motor configuration with all-wheel drive that achieves a combined power output of 890 kW, equivalent to around 1,210 horsepower. With this latter configuration, the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.68 seconds.

The three-motor system is part of BYD’s e³ architecture, known in the Denza lineup as Yi Sān Fāng. One of its features is that it allows independent control of the motors and combines this capability with the rear-wheel steering system. The Z9S also features full rear-wheel steering across the range, with the top version boasting a minimum turning radius of 4.75 meters.

The car can also be equipped with the Yunnian-A body control system, featuring air suspension and electronic damping management. Depending on the version, the rear wheels’ steering can achieve different degrees of rotation, and the system includes specialized functions such as lateral movement and what’s known as point-turning, designed specifically to facilitate maneuvering of a sedan over five meters in length.

To power this entire system, the Denza Z9S uses a battery with a capacity of 102 kWh and BYD’s second-generation Blade batteries. The range offers three certified figures under China’s CLTC cycle: 780, 920, and 1,100 kilometers. These figures can be estimated at around 680, 800, and 957 kilometers respectively under the WLTP standard.

The version capable of reaching 1,100 kilometers is particularly interesting because it combines a relatively modest battery for such range with a large-sized body. Additionally, its fast charging system is one of the main strengths of this model. Denza claims that it can go from 10% to 70% charge in about five minutes and from 10% to 97% in roughly nine minutes, under charging conditions compatible with its ultra-fast charging technology.

In China, the Denza Z9S began pre-orders in three versions with prices of 319,800, 349,800, and 389,800 yuan. Converting this to euros, the equivalent amounts are approximately 41,300, 45,200, and 50,300 euros, respectively.

Its launch in the Chinese market is scheduled for September 23, when the final prices and sales terms for all three versions will be revealed. The Denza Z9S stands out as one of the most eye-catching electric sedans in BYD’s current lineup, offering an approved range of up to 1,100 kilometers, fast charging capabilities, three motors, and 890 kW of power, all housed in a vehicle body over five meters long.
