Holiday itinerary

Nine days on the historic Great Dolomites Road from Bolzano toward Cortina. You overnight in Ortisei, Canazei, and Cortina so Lake Carezza, Passo Pordoi’s 33 hairpins, Alpe di Siusi, and Tre Cime sit on the drive, not as side quests. The rock turns pink at evening; that is why you came.

Season: Pordoi, Sella, Falzarego, and the Tre Cime toll road are usually June–October. Daily driving stays under 250 km on purpose.

Holiday itinerary

  1. Day 1 · Verona

The Arena holds the evening. A quiet city night before the Brenner approach — eat well; the passes start tomorrow.

  2. Day 2 · Bolzano

Ötzi’s museum and the last proper city coffee. From here the Grande Strada begins: palms give way to pine in a single afternoon.

  3. Day 3 · Ortisei

We overnight in Ortisei, Val Gardena’s wooden heart. Take the cable car to Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest alpine meadow, and walk until the Sassolungo sits on the horizon like a ship.

  4. Day 4 · Canazei

Val di Fassa before Passo Pordoi at 2239 m. Count the hairpins if you like — there are thirty-three to Arabba — or just let the Sella group do the talking.

  5. Day 5 · Cortina d'Ampezzo

After Falzarego at 2105 m the town sits in its amphitheatre of pale peaks. The pearl of the Dolomites is also a good place to eat late and look up.

  6. Day 6 · Misurina

Lake Misurina first, then the toll road to Rifugio Auronzo under Tre Cime. Go early; the light on those three walls does not wait.

  7. Day 8 · Venice

Park at Piazzale Roma and let the city take the car away from you. A night of water after a week of rock.

  8. Day 9 · Verona

A short motorway return. The Arena is still there if you want one last look before the holiday closes.
