Holiday itinerary

Nine days from Rome to Pompeii, Sorrento, and the SS163 between Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. You sleep in the coast towns instead of day-tripping the cliff road; lemons in the air, the sea a floor beneath the hairpins. Finish with Paestum’s temples on the way back — Greek stone on a southern plain.

Season: SS163 is narrow and slow; ferries between Salerno, Amalfi, and Positano help. No Alpine passes.

Holiday itinerary

  1. Day 1 · Rome

    The Colosseum and a city buffer before the coast. Eat well; tomorrow Vesuvius is already on the skyline.

  2. Day 3 · Pompeii

    Ruins with Vesuvius on the skyline; overnight nearby. Walk early, before the heat sits on the stones.

  3. Day 4 · Sorrento

    A cliff town and the start of the Amalfi drive. Lemons, a terrace, the sea a long way down.

  4. Day 5 · Positano

    Sleep on the coast instead of day-tripping the SS163. The town is stacked; walk down to the beach and up again slowly.

  5. Day 6 · Amalfi

    Cathedral square of the old maritime republic. Paper, lemons, a harbour that still thinks it is a capital.

  6. Day 7 · Ravello

    Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone above the sea. The gardens are the point; the view does the talking.

  7. Day 8 · Paestum

    Greek temples on the plain south of Salerno. After the cliff road the sky is suddenly wide.

  8. Day 9 · Rome

    Motorway return. The cliff road stays in the blood a little longer than the A1.
