World Premiere ID. California Cruise: The First All-Electric VW Camper

This is the long-awaited first member of a new all-electric California family: Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge (VWN) will unveil the ID. California Cruise at the Caravan Salon 2026. Based on the fully electric ID. Buzz, this new vehicle brings the freedom, flexibility, and practicality of the California series into the era of electric mobility.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is only kicking off with the ID. California Cruise; the lineup is set to be expanded gradually over the coming years, with additional fully electric California models added by 2028. Starting at a price of 60,761 euros, the new model offers an entry point into the electric California world. Unfortunately, VWN has yet to provide details on performance and range. The conventional ID Buzz Pro, on which the electric camper is based, delivers at least 210 kW of power and has a range of at least 421 kilometers.

Since its debut in 1988, the Volkswagen California has represented compact recreational mobility, high everyday usability, and maximum freedom in a van format. Over several generations, VW has repeatedly reinterpreted the California concept — from classic campers with pop-up roofs to particularly flexible beach versions that emphasized a streamlined, versatile interior design. As early as 2004, the California Beach concept car demonstrated that the essence of the California lies in flexibility, sleeping options, and the ability to travel spontaneously — rather than solely in a specific roof design.

The ID. California Cruise builds upon this approach as the first all-electric California model based on the ID. Buzz. Since its introduction, there has been consistent demand from markets, the media, and camping enthusiasts for an electric version of the California. With the ID. California Cruise, VWN now provides a concrete response to this need.

For impromptu trips, weekend excursions, and longer road trips, the ID. California Cruise is equipped with specially designed, though somewhat basic, camping facilities. Inside, it offers a sleeping area for two people with a bed surface measuring 2.03 meters in length and 1.20 meters in width. The sleeping system includes a newly developed, nine-centimeter-thick comfort folding mattress designed to provide an especially pleasant sleeping experience.

The equipment also includes ventilation grilles for the front side windows, tinting elements for all glass panels, as well as two camping chairs and a camping table. If the optional panoramic glass roof is installed, the appropriate tinting is also included. All components can be stored compactly inside the vehicle.

The visual identifiers of the ID. California Cruise include exclusive seat covers in the “Miwo” design with an integrated California logo, a California logo at the rear, and special “Cruise” decals on the sides of the vehicle.

The new California mode is specifically designed for camping. In the ID. California Cruise, an additional control unit allows for targeted adjustment of lighting and comfort functions, provides continuous power to USB ports, and optimizes the interior for nighttime use. Additionally, the climate control can heat or cool the interior as needed, thereby maintaining a comfortably temperature-controlled sleeping environment for an extended period (up to 48 hours straight, depending on battery charge and temperature difference).

To support the electrification efforts, Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge is adding new features to the California App for electric travel. For the first time, suitable charging stations along the route are displayed during trip planning. Owners of the ID. California Cruise and future electrified California models can now plan their trips in advance, including all necessary charging stops. Additionally, the ID. California Cruise features Plug & Charge through the Volkswagen App: charging starts automatically at compatible chargers as soon as the cable is plugged in, without requiring separate authentication at the charger.

The Vehicle-to-Load function shines especially when camping. With a continuous power output of up to 2000 watts and a peak power output of 3.6 kW, the ID. California Cruise becomes a mobile power source. This allows coffee makers, water boilers, electric stoves, refrigerators, lighting systems, or chargers for e-bikes and e-scooters to be powered directly from the vehicle’s high-voltage battery while on the go. Mobile workstations or outdoor kitchens can also be powered independently of an external power supply.

The ID. California Cruise is based on the ID. Buzz Pro, available with either a short or long wheelbase. The base vehicle comes equipped with enhanced standard features: the “Interior Style Package,” the “Comfort Package,” and the “PowerSocket” as a charging adapter for the Vehicle-to-Load function are always included.

A New Chapter for VW

With the world premiere of the ID. California Cruise at the Caravan Salon 2026, a new chapter begins for the California family. The ID. California Cruise combines the well-known strengths of the California with the possibilities of electric mobility, demonstrating how camping and electric travel in a Bulli format can be combined. As the first fully electric California, it marks the start of a new model family through which Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles carries the success story of the California into the electric era. First deliveries are scheduled for early 2027, allowing people to experience the electric California world in the near future.

Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge will showcase the entire California family at the Caravan Salon 2026, held from August 28 to September 6, 2026, in Hall 16 of the Düsseldorf Trade Fair grounds. In addition to the vehicles, visitors can learn more about the California range at the exhibition booth. This includes digital offerings related to the free California app, which assists users in planning trips and provides information on vehicle features and camping equipment.
