Wallbox Rheidon WB500 – everything needed to charge a car [test]

Over slightly over 2 years of driving an EV, I’ve moved from “brick” chargers, single-phase and three-phase ones, to wallboxes. Each solution has its own use case. This time, the Rheidon WB500 wallbox ended up in my hands, or rather on my wall—it offers basically everything needed to charge an electric car conveniently.

Installation of the Rheidon wallbox

The box containing the wallbox includes practically everything needed, and the device is designed for self-installation. It comes with a cable ending in a Type 2 plug for the car and a 16 A plug for a three-phase outlet. We can disconnect the latter and connect the wallbox directly to the cable running from the wall, but that requires more work by an electrician. However, it is possible to do so. What’s missing in the kit for me is a holder for the Type 2 cable, but it can be purchased separately at the store for 119 PLN.

The entire installation process for the Rheidon WB500 is very simple. We screw the wallbox holder to the wall. The kit includes mounting screws and a drill in case they are needed. We hang the device and connect it to electricity. It’s also a good idea to connect the wallbox to a mobile app so that the charger’s time is synchronized and it can be customized further.

Features

Through the display, we can set the time and date on the charger using buttons if we don’t connect it to an app. Additionally, we can adjust the charging current range from 8-16 A, which is sufficient for daily use.

But if you want more fun, Rheidon offers such possibilities through its mobile app. After installing it and creating an account, I highly recommend setting the language to English right away, as the translation is currently so poor that it’s hard to understand. I’ve already reported this to the distributor, and they’ll likely fix it. There are also quite a few settings available, ranging from the way charging is initiated to schedules, and even adding users and additional RFID authentication devices. It’s very convenient if you buy it for an office for employees where the parking is shared, or if you have a spot in an underground garage and want to authorize charging without worrying that someone else will use it improperly.

Thanks to the dedicated Load Balancer, Rheidon allows you to tie the wallbox’s operation to the functionality of solar panels if you have them, or adjust the charger’s performance based on current energy usage at home to prevent overloading surge protectors. However, there will be more information about it in a while, as it doesn’t fit in my cabinet yet and I need to modify it slightly.

Summary

The Wallbox Rheidon WB500 is a device that meets the expectations and requirements of a very wide range of users. It’s simple to install and configure. And thanks to its truly compact size and attractive design, it fits well into any wall.
