Volkswagen ID.3 GTI debuts as the most powerful GTI in the brand's history

Volkswagen ID.3 GTI debuts as the first fully electric GTI and the most powerful GTI model ever to enter series production. Revealed in the 50th anniversary year of the GTI badge, the new hot hatch delivers 240 kW (326 PS) to the rear axle and an exceptional 545 Nm of torque, marking a dramatic evolution of the brand's iconic performance formula.
The ID.3 GTI accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, a figure that places it firmly in traditional sports‑car territory. Volkswagen says the immediacy of the electric motor's torque fundamentally reshapes the GTI driving experience, especially when paired with the adaptive DCC sports chassis, progressive steering and a low center of gravity. A new GTI driving mode, activated via a dedicated steering‑wheel button, sharpens all dynamic parameters and unlocks Launch Control, while the cabin lighting and digital instruments shift into a red GTI‑specific theme.
A 79 kWh battery supplies the electric powertrain and supports DC fast charging at up to 183 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in roughly 29 minutes. Efficiency improvements allow the ID.3 GTI to reach ranges of up to 601 km, extending its role beyond performance into long‑distance practicality. Volkswagen emphasizes that the model remains a true everyday all‑rounder, offering generous interior space and flexible usability.
Design plays a central role in distinguishing the ID.3 GTI from the standard ID.3 Neo. The front end introduces a red horizontal GTI stripe above the illuminated LED light bar and VW logo, echoing the original 1976 Golf GTI. Vertical LED elements in the bumper mark the model as an electric GTI, while a gloss‑black honeycomb grille and motorsport‑inspired red accents reinforce its performance identity. Standard 20‑inch Wörthersee alloy wheels pay tribute to the legendary Austrian GTI meet, and a revised color philosophy gives the car a longer, sleeker silhouette by painting the roof section in the body color rather than black.
Inside, Volkswagen has reinterpreted classic GTI cues for the electric era. The cabin features a red accent line across the dashboard, a red 12‑o’clock steering‑wheel marker and premium sport seats upholstered in a modernized "Superclark" tartan pattern inspired by the first‑generation Golf GTI. The redesigned interior architecture of the ID.3 Neo carries over, including a larger Digital Cockpit, a 12.9‑inch Innovision infotainment display, updated climate controls and a new center console with a rotary volume knob.
The ID.3 GTI also inherits the full suite of optional equipment from the ID.3 Neo, ranging from a panoramic sunroof and Harman Kardon audio system to an augmented‑reality head‑up display and a new vehicle‑to‑load PowerSocket for powering external devices. Advanced driver‑assistance systems include the latest Travel Assist, which can respond to traffic lights for the first time by automatically braking the vehicle when it detects a red signal.
Pre‑sales for the ID.3 GTI will begin in early 2027, marking a milestone moment as Volkswagen brings the GTI legacy into the electric age with more power, more torque and a distinctly modern interpretation of performance design.
