Scania will accelerate the rollout of electric trucks in the Asian market

Scania plans to start producing battery-powered electric trucks at its new factory in Zhugao, China, in the near future. It should be noted that demand for new electric trucks in China rose by 80% in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2025. This increase was driven, in part, by rising diesel fuel prices due to the war in Iran. By the end of 2026, their share is expected to reach 30% in the segment of new heavy-duty trucks.

As Scania’s CEO Christian Levin stated in an interview, projections suggest that by the beginning of 2027, half of all trucks sold in China will be electric. This is why the company has decided to accelerate the rollout of Scania’s electric trucks in both the Chinese and other Asian markets.

According to Kristina Levin, obtaining licenses for various types of activities in China is quite complicated, but in this case the process is progressing faster than expected.

For reference, Scania’s new plant in Zhugao (Jiangsu province) was opened in 2025. It is the first factory in China that is fully owned by Traton Group, which includes Scania. It is designed to produce 50,000 trucks per year, including both diesel and electric models.
