Record 200 km on electricity: Volvo unveils new long-range hybrid models XC60 and XC90
Swedish premium automaker Volvo Cars officially announced the introduction of unique long-range plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions for its most popular SUVs, the XC60 and XC90. The key engineering breakthrough of this restyling is a dramatic 2.5-fold increase in pure electric range compared to previous models. The mid-size Volvo XC60 can now cover up to 200 km on a single battery charge, a record for its class, while the large seven-seater flagship Volvo XC90 offers up to 160 km of completely silent, eco-friendly driving. Official orders for these new models, including the exclusive Black Edition, are now open in European and U.S. markets, with mass production set to begin later this fall.
The extensive body redesign primarily affected the XC60 model, which received a completely new front and rear design. Designers reimagined the geometry of the hood, front fenders, and bumpers, and installed the updated Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED lighting system in its most refined graphical form. At the rear, different LED headlights were fitted with an emphasis on horizontal lines, a modified trunk lid, and diamond-cut alloy wheels. The passenger cabin of both SUVs welcomes the driver with luxurious finishes made of natural wood, Cardamom-colored ventilated Nappa leather, and a cutting-edge 11.2-inch touchscreen for Volvo Car UX’s multimedia system. The vehicle’s electronics have been fully integrated with the next generation of Google Gemini artificial intelligence, which perfectly understands the driver’s everyday language for route planning or typing messages.

The engineering foundation of the updated PHEV hybrids has been completely modernized with the installation of a new, significantly larger lithium-ion battery integrated into the vehicle’s flat floor, along with a reinforced rear electric motor. The powerful electric motor handles all daily driving tasks instantly, while the conventional gasoline turbo engine is activated only when needed for longer trips. The safety suite of these models has been enhanced thanks to an upgraded set of radar and camera systems, enabling the introduction of an intelligent automatic emergency steering system for safe obstacle avoidance, a Door Opening Alert function to warn of approaching cyclists when doors are opened, Pilot Assist lane-keeping assistance, and a 360-degree surround-view camera with a 3D display. Both crossover models remain available as well.
