NYC selects it’s electric to build out curbside EV charging network

The city of New York and its partner the New York Power Authority have selected Brooklyn-headquartered it’s electric to build out the city’s permanent curbside EV charging network across all five boroughs. The company will replace the city’s current pilot infrastructure and install hundreds of new curbside chargers over the next three years.
The city’s Department of Transportation has announced plans to expand the PlugNYC curbside EV charging network from the current 88 Level 2 charging points to 700. The buildout will be targeted at neighborhoods with high concentrations of taxi and rideshare drivers and limited off-street parking.
New York City is home to more than 80,000 rideshare drivers. The majority of these drivers park on the street, and this has been a major obstacle keeping them from switching to EVs. More curbside charging could remove that barrier.
The city’s Green Rides initiative requires that all Uber and Lyft trips licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) be electric or accessible by 2030.
“This initiative will make charging more affordable and convenient, helping [to] expand charging access to TLC-licensed drivers and residents of low- and moderate-income neighborhoods underserved by private charging options,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn.
“More accessible charging is critical to helping Uber drivers make the switch to electric,” said Josh Gold, Senior Director of Public Policy at Uber. “Rideshare drivers cover significantly more miles than the average motorist, so expanding charging where they actually need it can deliver outsized benefits for air quality while strengthening the city’s charging network for everyone.”
Engineering and construction services will be provided by Maverick Construction, a full-service engineering, procurement and construction company headquartered in Boston. Maverick and it’s electric have a long-standing partnership—the two companies delivered the City of Boston’s curbside charging program in 2025.
“You can design the best curbside charger in the world, but none of it matters if you can’t get it built safely, on time, and in coordination with the utility, on a real city block. That’s what Maverick brings to this partnership,” said Nathan King, co-founder and CEO of it’s electric.
The network’s backend platform will be provided by it’s electric’s long-term partner, SWTCH Energy. The charger’s design is a collaboration between it’s electric and Billings Jackson Design. The chargers will be manufactured in Queens.
