The Chinese automaker Li Auto officially introduced a major technical and technological upgrade to its most eye-catching luxury electric minivan, the Mega. This electric vehicle has undergone its second modernization since its debut at the end of 2023. Buyers have two trims to choose from – the Home version starting at 529,800 yuan ($78,400) and the top-tier Ultra version priced at 559,800 yuan ($82,900).

The exterior design of the upgraded Li Auto Mega retains its unique monocoque silhouette reminiscent of a high-speed train, but it features several significant aerodynamic and stylistic improvements. The most notable visual change is the introduction of new solid aerodynamic wheels designed to substantially reduce air resistance. In the first official photos, the test vehicle shows these wheels in a white finish, though buyers can choose the black version at no extra cost. Additionally, designers have refreshed the bumpers by adding chrome accents to the front section and making subtle adjustments to the rear design.

The designers abandoned the previous pneumatic suspension in favor of a fully active hydraulic system. The new smart shock absorbers can independently and instantly apply force to each individual wheel, completely eliminating body roll in sharp turns and preventing longitudinal swaying during aggressive braking.

To improve maneuverability in urban areas, the massive minivan is equipped for the first time with a fully steerable chassis system that includes rear-wheel steering, and an additional lidar—now the fourth in total—is installed on the roof to ensure flawless operation of its proprietary autopilot.

The two-motor powertrain now features a boosted rear electric motor with a power output of 346 horsepower, up from the previous 328 horsepower. The front motor retains its original output of 208 horsepower, resulting in a total peak power of 554 horsepower for the system. Replacing the previous 102.7 kWh battery, the minivan is equipped with a new, larger lithium battery from Chinese giant CATL, boasting a capacity of 108 kWh. The increased battery capacity along with improved aerodynamics have allowed the driving range to reach 710 kilometers under China’s CLTC testing cycle.

The Chinese startup Li Auto (Li Xiang), founded in 2015 by entrepreneur Li Xiang, is a unique phenomenon in the Chinese market as it was the first among young brands to achieve net profits. The key to the brand’s success lay in its focus on extended-range hybrid SUVs (EREV), where the gasoline engine functions solely as a generator to charge the battery. Li Auto’s large family minivan, the Mega, is the first electric vehicle in the brand’s history.
