Hyundai Motor Türkiye expands with new battery plant for IONIQ 3 production

Hyundai Motor Türkiye is deepening its commitment to electric mobility with a major new investment that will add a battery assembly plant to its long‑running İzmit production hub. The facility, which forms part of a broader €715 million investment package tied to the upcoming IONIQ 3, will initially create jobs for more than 300 people and strengthen the country's role in Hyundai's global EV supply chain. The company, which has been manufacturing vehicles in Türkiye for nearly three decades, will begin series production of the IONIQ 3 in August. Of the total investment, €55 million is dedicated to the new battery plant, developed in cooperation with Hyundai Mobis. The facility will assemble battery cells using a fully automated system, contributing not only to vehicle production but also to the development of local expertise in electric‑vehicle technologies. Murat Berkel, General Manager of Sales, Marketing and After‑Sales at Hyundai Motor Türkiye, emphasized the strategic importance of the move. He noted that the İzmit plant - Hyundai's first overseas factory - has produced 3.3 million vehicles since 1997, and said the new battery investment marks a proud milestone for both the company and the Turkish automotive industry. Berkel expects the project to support Hyundai's long‑term growth in the country. Production volumes are set to ramp up quickly, with 27,000 units planned for this year and more than 40,000 next year. The plant will assemble NMC battery cells sourced from Hungary and LFP short‑range battery packs imported from China. While the initial focus is the IONIQ 3, Hyundai aims to use the new facility as a foundation for future electric and hybrid models, while also strengthening the domestic supplier ecosystem. Covering 30,000 square meters and equipped with 27 robots, the new plant will prepare battery packs for installation without manual handling.
