Honda will build a new automobile factory for $2.5 billion

The Japanese company Honda plans to significantly expand its manufacturing network in North America. The firm is negotiating with the authorities of Ohio state in the U.S. for subsidies to build a massive automobile plant costing around $2.5 billion. The new facility will focus exclusively on producing large SUVs and off-road vehicles equipped with hybrid powertrains. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first mass-produced vehicles rolling off the assembly line in 2030.

The decision to build a new factory was made after the brand officially scrapped plans to develop and produce two fully electric models from its promising “0 Series” lineup. North America is the company’s most important market, accounting for around 40% of the brand’s global sales. The planned capacity of the future plant will allow for the production of up to 250,000 vehicles per year. The new facility will be constructed next to Honda’s existing plant in Ohio, which will significantly streamline internal logistics and the supply of automotive components.

The official model lineup for the new plant remains secret for now. The company is expected to launch with the next-generation premium Acura MDX crossover, which will be built on a new platform architecture. Alongside it, a new three-row flagship model codenamed Acura XL could make its debut as a direct competitor to the Lexus TX. Additionally, Honda plans to establish assembly of the large family SUV Pilot XXL in Ohio. The new model is expected to be 203 mm longer than the current Pilot, with production set to begin in early 2032.
