The Chinese automotive conglomerate Geely officially announced the completion of the first phase of development and the start of road testing for a new generation of solid-state batteries. This technology, long awaited by the industry, is now ready for pilot implementation. The first test prototypes of vehicles equipped with these new power sources will hit public roads next year.

The main technical advantage of Geely’s new batteries lies in their high energy storage density, reaching an impressive 500 watt-hours per kilogram. Thanks to these figures, the range of mass-produced electric vehicles on a single charge will exceed 1,000 kilometers. This brings the driving range of eco-friendly vehicles on par with that of traditional cars equipped with diesel engines. Another significant achievement by Chinese engineers is the service life of these battery cells, which can reach up to 1 million kilometers. Such durability completely eliminates buyers’ concerns about rapid battery degradation and capacity loss over time.

The first models to adopt the new technological architecture under the pilot program will be the premium vehicles from Zeekr, Lynk & Co, Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, and Smart. The company will announce the exact timeline for transitioning to full-scale mass production and the cost of battery replacements after completing a series of road tests.

AC Overview

The key difference between solid-state batteries and modern mainstream lithium-ion or lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries lies in the complete elimination of liquid or gel-like electrolytes in favor of a solid material layer (ceramics, glass, or polymers).

This solution allows for a radical increase in energy density per unit of mass, but most importantly, it ensures absolute fire safety. Traditional liquid electrolytes are highly flammable and can cause thermal runaway and immediate battery ignition in the event of mechanical damage or internal short circuits, which is difficult to extinguish. The solid-state layer completely eliminates the risk of spontaneous ignition, can handle higher current levels during ultra-fast charging, and operates stably at extremely low temperatures.
