Ford and Geely unite in Spain to produce new multi‑energy models from 2028

Ford and Geely Auto have set the stage for one of the most significant industrial shifts in Europe's automotive sector this decade, announcing a new joint venture that will turn Ford's Valencia, Spain, plant into a shared manufacturing hub for next‑generation multi‑energy vehicles. The partnership, revealed on July 23, 2026, aims to secure the long‑term future of the facility, boost competitiveness, and accelerate both companies' European strategies as the region undergoes rapid regulatory and market transformation.
Ford will hold a 66% stake in the new entity, with Geely Auto owning the remaining 34%. Pending regulatory approval, operations are expected to begin in the first half of 2027, with the first new vehicles rolling off the production line in 2028. Production of the Ford Kuga, one of Europe's best‑selling plug‑in hybrids, will continue uninterrupted throughout the transition.
A Strategic Alliance for a Tougher Market
Europe has become one of the most challenging battlegrounds for global automakers, defined by tightening emissions rules, rising operating costs, and fierce competition from both established brands and new entrants. Ford and Geely say the joint venture directly addresses these pressures by pooling production volume, maximizing factory utilization, and lowering per‑vehicle manufacturing costs to meet the industry's emerging cost benchmark.
The Valencia plant - already one of Ford's most advanced facilities, with a potential annual capacity of around 500,000 vehicles - will be transformed into a high‑tech, multi‑brand production center focused on low‑ and zero‑emission mobility. The companies emphasize that the partnership is built on trust and shared principles, rooted in Ford's sale of Volvo Cars to Geely in 2010 and Geely's subsequent stewardship of the brand.
"This JV with Ford in Europe reflects our commitment to open, collaborative product development as part of our growth strategy," said Alex Nan, Vice President of Geely Auto Group. "We are building cars in Europe, for Europe, alongside a trusted partner."
A New Vehicle Portfolio for European Drivers
The joint venture will produce a diverse lineup of Ford and Geely models tailored to European tastes, spanning plug‑in hybrids, combustion options, and full battery‑electric vehicles. All will feature advanced digital experiences and multi‑energy flexibility.
Ford's lineup will include:
Ford Kuga: Production continues without interruption.
A rugged new Bronco: A compact, adventure‑ready SUV designed for European roads, entering production in 2028.
An all‑new multi‑energy crossover: Jointly developed with Geely, arriving in 2028 as part of Ford's plan to launch five new passenger vehicles in Europe by 2029.
Geely Auto will add:
Two new electric SUVs: The first Geely‑branded vehicles to be manufactured in Europe under this JV, scheduled to begin production in 2028.
The collaboration supports Geely Auto's accelerating global expansion - bolstered by 474,228 overseas sales in the first half of the year - while reinforcing Ford's strategy of using partnerships to achieve scale, speed, and cost efficiency in Europe.
Securing Jobs and Strengthening Spain's Industrial Base
Ford and Geely say the joint venture will provide long‑term stability for the Valencia plant and create potential for future high‑tech job growth. The announcement also highlights the role of Spain's national and regional governments, whose support has been instrumental in enabling the transformation.
"What we've achieved in Valencia, with the ongoing support of Spain's national and regional governments, is a masterclass in public‑private partnership," said Jim Baumbick, President of Ford of Europe. "This team will help build our future."
With production of new Ford and Geely models set to begin in 2028, the Valencia facility is poised to become one of Europe's most important hubs for affordable, technologically advanced, low‑CO₂ mobility - reshaping the competitive landscape as the decade closes.

EV sales in the U.S. are booming in Q3 2025
Electric vehicle (EV) sales in the U.S. are booming - and Tesla and General Motors (GM) are at the front of the pack. Why the sudden surge? Many buyers were racing to take advantage of federal tax credits worth up to $7,500 before they expired in September, thanks to the Trump administration's "One Big Beautiful Bill Act." Tesla still holds the largest slice of the EV pie, delivering over 497,000 vehicles in Q3...

Some of the most noteworthy incentives for buying EVs in the U.S. after the end of the tax credit
Automakers in North America are increasingly reducing on‑the‑road prices for battery electric vehicles by amounts close to the former $7,500 federal tax credit. Manufacturers are applying the savings in different ways: permanent MSRP adjustments, time‑limited rebates applied at the point of sale, or larger dealer incentives that lower the cash price before financing or leasing. The strategy shortens the cash gap for...
