Dacia unveiled the affordable electric crossover Spring

The Romanian automotive brand Dacia, part of the French Renault group, has unveiled the second generation of its most affordable and popular electric vehicle, the Spring. The launch of this new model marks the first step in the brand’s comprehensive strategic plan for 2030, which includes introducing four fully electric next-generation models.

Thanks to new design approaches, the entire development process took less than 2 years. Mass production of this crossover for the European market is taking place at the modernized Novo Mesto factory in Slovenia.

The new Spring is built on Renault’s advanced compact electric RG-EV small platform architecture. Engineers managed to extend the crossover hatchback by 180 mm, giving it a much more stable and robust ride quality on the road, while also providing significantly more headroom for drivers and passengers.

The exterior design features sharp geometric shapes, with signature black glossy decorative panels on the front and rear that visually connect the LED lighting units in line with the new Dacia Link brand logo style.

The interior is equipped with a 7-inch digital dashboard and an automatic electric parking brake, while higher trims come with a 10.1-inch touchscreen for the Media Nav Live multimedia system, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The vehicle is powered by a new electric motor producing 82 horsepower (60 kW) and 175 Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.1 seconds with a top speed of 130 km/h. It is fueled by an efficient lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery with a usable capacity of 27.5 kWh, ensuring a range of up to 250 km according to the European WLTP standard.

The standard equipment includes a 6.6 kW AC onboard charger, while the optional Fast-charge Pack features an 11 kW three-phase charger and a 50 kW DC module that allows the battery to go from 15% to 80% charge in just 28 minutes.

The concept of the Dacia Spring, whose first generation has been sold worldwide since 2021 in over 210,000 units, is based on engineering analysis of the actual daily needs of urban residents. An audit of the telematics data from thousands of first-generation owners showed that the average European city car driver travels only 34 km per day at an average speed of around 34 km/h, with the vehicle being charged at night from a standard household outlet in 75% of cases. For this reason, engineers at the Renault Group deliberately opted not to use large and expensive lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of over 50 kWh when developing the second-generation crossover. Installing a compact and lightweight 27.5 kWh LFP battery not only reduced the vehicle’s weight but also maintained its status as a cost-effective and affordable electric car in the European market.
