The Romanian brand Dacia, owned by the French conglomerate Renault, has chosen its production site for its unusual new model. The mass production of this ultra-budget urban electric car, based on the Dacia Hipster concept, will begin next year at a factory in Xi’an, China. Previously, this assembly line produced the previous generation of the Spring electric car, but after production of the new Spring was moved to Slovenia, the Chinese factory was temporarily shut down. The price of this new model in the European market is expected to be less than 11,500 euros, making it the cheapest model in the brand’s lineup.

The design of the production electric car is expected to retain almost entirely the awkward style of the Hipster concept. Designers only slightly simplified the shape of the front bumper, altered the door structure, and added a single small windshield wiper. The vehicle has compact dimensions: it is only 3 meters long, 1.55 meters wide, and 1.54 meters high. The body will maintain a two-color scheme with contrasting bright elements on a matte gray plastic background.

The interior is designed for minimal comfort, and the entertainment system will be based on the owner’s smartphone software.

The Dacia Hipster was designed to meet the strict European standards for the heavy quadricycle category L7e. According to these rules, the weight of the vehicle’s structure without including the battery must not exceed 450 kg. To stay within this limit and maintain a low cost, engineers will use a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of around 15 kWh. The technical specifications will become known closer to the launch.
