BMW officially unveiled the new electric crossover coupe, the iX4. This model joins the Neue Klasse family and features a new 800-volt electric architecture, fast charging at up to 400 kW, and a range of 828 km. The top-tier BMW iX4 M60 xDrive delivers an impressive 612 horsepower.

The new BMW iX4 essentially brings the concept of the coupe-style X4 into the brand’s new electric era. It boasts a design typical of the Neue Klasse, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a sloping roof. The iconic “snout” design and headlights are now visually integrated into a single graphic element.

The standard equipment on the iX4 includes the M Sport package with 20-inch wheels and sports brakes. The top-tier M60 model features 21-inch wheels, with wheels up to 22 inches in diameter available as an option for this series. The vehicle also comes with a larger panoramic roof featuring climate-controlled glass.

New Electric Platform

What’s even more interesting is what lies beneath the body. The BMW iX4 uses the sixth-generation eDrive electric system – Gen6. It includes new cylindrical battery cells, an 800-volt architecture, and a new generation of electric motors.

At launch, BMW will offer two all-wheel-drive versions.

The BMW iX4 40 xDrive is equipped with two electric motors delivering a total power of 374 horsepower and a torque of 520 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, with a maximum range of 638 km according to the WLTP cycle.

The higher-end BMW iX4 50 xDrive delivers 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h. The battery capacity of this version is 108.7 kWh.

The key figure here is the range, which reaches up to 828 km according to WLTP standards. The maximum power for fast DC charging is 400 kW. According to BMW, the iX4 50 xDrive can gain enough energy for approximately another 387 km of driving in just 10 minutes at a fast charging station. Two-way charging is also available.

BMW iX4 M60 – 612 horsepower and 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds

Later on, the lineup will be expanded with the most powerful version, the BMW iX4 M60 xDrive. Its two electric motors combined deliver 612 horsepower and 875 Nm of torque.

The 0-100 km/h acceleration takes just 3.9 seconds, with a top speed limited to 240 km/h. The claimed range reaches an impressive 777 km.

The M60 version also features an adaptive M suspension, a sport steering wheel with variable gear ratio, and an electronically controlled rear M differential.

New Interface Instead of the Traditional Dashboard

The BMW iX4 introduces a new concept for control with the BMW Panoramic iDrive operating system based on Operating System X. It combines BMW Panoramic Vision, an optional 3D Head-Up Display, and a large 17.9-inch central display.

A new high-performance computer called Heart of Joy is responsible for managing the powertrain and chassis. According to BMW, it processes related tasks approximately ten times faster than systems from the previous generation.

There is also Motorway Assistant, which allows driving without holding the steering wheel on approved roads at speeds up to 130 km/h. The availability of this feature depends on the specific market.

When Will the BMW iX4 Be Available?

The BMW iX4 is scheduled to launch in March 2027. The iX4 40 xDrive and iX4 50 xDrive will be the first to hit the market, with the top-tier BMW iX4 M60 xDrive following shortly after.

The new iX4 is important to BMW not only as a successor to the X4 concept. This model clearly demonstrates just how significant a technological leap the Neue Klasse must achieve: a range of over 800 km, 400-kilowatt charging capability, and nearly 400 km of additional range gained in ten minutes significantly narrow the practical gap between electric vehicles and internal combustion engine cars.
