The BMW M GmbH sports division celebrated a major milestone in its production history. Since the establishment of the unit in 1972, the assembly plant in Munich has produced its millionth vehicle featuring the iconic M lettering. The commemorative model was a powered sedan BMW M3 Competition, painted in the exclusive Fire Orange III color from the BMW Individual palette. The official key handover took place at the brand’s main factory, which will switch entirely to producing only electric vehicles starting the following year.

The exterior of the millionth-anniversary sedan features classic muscular proportions, but the brand used this historic milestone to reveal the first images of a heavily camouflaged prototype of the entirely new electric BMW M3 EV based on the Neue Klasse platform. Based on the photos, the production version will have a more restrained design compared to the concept car: engineers installed standard rearview mirrors, sleek recessed door handles, a smoother front splitter, and a compact spoiler on the trunk lid. Nevertheless, the vehicle retains its signature ventilated hood and yellow accents on the LED lighting.

The electric vehicle is expected to be powered by a four-motor setup (one electric motor per wheel). Rumors suggest its total output will range from 700 to 1,000 horsepower. The main benchmark for the Bavarian engineers is the upcoming three-motor electric Mercedes-AMG C-Class, which has around 800 horsepower.

For comparison, the anniversary orange M3 Competition sedan, equipped with a 3-liter V6 gasoline engine with twin turbochargers, produces 530 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds.
