Audi A2 e‑tron sets a new efficiency benchmark ahead of its 2026 debut

Audi A2 e‑tron sets a new efficiency benchmark ahead of its 2026 debut

Audi is preparing to introduce what it now calls the most efficient model in its history: the upcoming Audi A2 e‑tron. Ahead of its full reveal in fall 2026, the company has published detailed preliminary data showing just how far its engineers have pushed electric‑vehicle efficiency in the compact class.

According to WLTP measurements, the A2 e‑tron in its 140‑kW configuration with the optional Efficiency Package 1 achieves a remarkably low energy consumption of 12.8 kWh per 100 km. Audi attributes this milestone to a tightly integrated approach combining advanced aerodynamics, a re‑engineered electric drive system, and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery optimized for everyday use.

Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG, frames the new model as a modern continuation of the original A2's efficiency legacy. The new e‑tron version leans heavily on aerodynamic refinement: a drag coefficient of 0.24, air‑curtain channels, gap reducers around the wheel arches, and an active cool‑air intake that stays closed during normal driving to reduce turbulence. Together, these measures cut consumption by up to 0.9 kWh/100 km compared with an identical model without the aerodynamic package.

The drive system itself has been overhauled for higher efficiency. The permanently excited synchronous motor uses thinner laminations to reduce iron losses, while updated power electronics with silicon carbide semiconductors significantly lower switching losses. A new low‑friction transmission oil and a tall 10.2:1 gear ratio further reduce energy demand at higher speeds. Audi says the upgraded drive system is up to 10 percent more efficient than before.

The A2 e‑tron's 61‑kWh LFP battery is designed for longevity and consistent performance. Its cell‑to‑pack construction increases energy density, while an adapted cooling strategy boosts wallbox charging efficiency to 89.6%. The chemistry allows routine 100% charging without accelerated aging, and the model supports bidirectional charging - Vehicle‑to‑Load for powering external devices and Vehicle‑to‑Home for use as a domestic energy storage system.

Audi plans to unveil the A2 e‑tron in fall 2026, positioning it as an all‑electric entry point into the brand’s compact lineup. With its combination of aerodynamic precision, intelligent battery management, and refined electric drive technology, the A2 e‑tron signals Audi's intent to push efficiency to the forefront of its EV strategy.
