Huawei-backed Luxeed to launch RX electric SUV on September 28

The Luxeed RX's starting pre-sales price has fallen to 269,800 yuan ($39,980) with the addition of a smaller-battery option,.

Huawei's HIMA will also open pre-orders for Stelato's first MPV, the V8, at the same event as it broadens its lineup.

Luxeed, the electric vehicle (EV) brand jointly developed by Huawei and Chery (HKEX: 9973), will launch the RX coupe SUV (sport utility vehicle) on September 28, adding a fourth model to its lineup.

HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) announced the plan on Monday. The launch event will begin at 2:30 pm Beijing Time on September 28.

Stelato, the brand jointly developed by Huawei and BAIC (SHA: 600733), will also open pre-orders for its first MPV (multi-purpose vehicle), the V8, at the event.

The launch date announcement came 1 day after Luxeed added an 81-kWh battery option for the RX, lowering its starting pre-sales price by about 10% to 269,800 yuan ($39,980).

The smaller-battery option comes in 2 configurations. A version equipped with in-cabin LiDAR using a shared optical path starts at 269,800 yuan in pre-sales, while a version with an architecture designed for Level 3 autonomous driving starts at 329,800 yuan.

Pre-orders for the RX opened on August 20 with a 100-kWh battery option, priced between 299,800 yuan and 359,800 yuan in pre-sales. Final prices will be announced at launch.

The smaller battery broadens the RX's price range, positioning the driving-focused model to compete more widely in China's sporty electric SUV market.

Zhao Changjiang, Luxeed's executive director and executive vice president, previously said 70% of RX pre-order customers were buying an additional vehicle and already owned other cars.

Not every customer needs a larger battery, he said, adding that the 81-kWh version can meet daily commuting and weekend travel needs with efficient energy use.

The RX, a mid-to-large-size electric coupe SUV, is built on Huawei's Tuling platform and offers single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations.

It measures 5,020 mm in length, 2,007 mm in width and 1,585 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. It uses Huawei's Giant Whale battery platform and a new-generation high-performance electric drive system.

Driving technology is among the key distinctions between RX variants. The higher-specification version features an architecture designed for Level 3 autonomous driving, with redundancy in systems including power supply, computing, braking and steering.

That architecture does not mean Level 3 autonomous driving will be available when the vehicle launches.

Luxeed's current lineup includes the S7 sedan, R7 coupe SUV and V9 MPV. The RX will further expand the brand's presence in the electric SUV market.

The Stelato V8, which will open for pre-orders at the same event, made its debut at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 21. Positioned as a flagship family MPV, it will offer battery electric vehicle (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants.

The V8 is 5,335 mm long, has a wheelbase of 3,250 mm and features power sliding doors. It will be Stelato's third model, following the S9 sedan and G9 SUV. Pricing and a formal launch date have yet to be announced.

The planned models include a mid-to-large-size electric SUV and a large electric GT, with Maserati leaning toward launching the GT first.
