Volvo EX40 facelift now available from €47,490
Volvo is giving the EX40 a facelift and slightly adjusting its technology in the process. The nomenclature is also changing, analogous to the smaller EX30. Production of the revised electric compact is scheduled to start in November, with first deliveries of the facelift model expected by the end of 2026.

The EX40 is one of the longest-established models in Volvo’s electric lineup. Originally launched as the XC40 Recharge, the compact SUV is now known as the EX40 and is set to continue production for several more years. To ensure its longevity, Volvo has given the model a fresh update. Orders are now open in ‘selected markets’. The facelift primarily introduces a new naming structure: the Single and Twin Motor variants are now called P5 Electric, P5 Long Range, and P8 Performance AWD – mirroring the smaller EX30. A notable change is that the top-tier variant now delivers 325 kW of output, up from 300 kW. The front motor contributes 135 kW, while the rear motor adds another 190 kW.
Additionally, the entry-level P5 Electric variant now offers slightly improved range compared to the previous base EX40, thanks to more efficient electric motors. With the smaller 70 kWh battery, the model now achieves up to 477 kilometres according to WLTP – ten kilometres more than before. For the Long Range variant with the larger battery, there is no change, as it remains at a maximum of 576 kilometres under WLTP. All variants now come with a heat pump as standard. Further updates primarily concern the body design and software. Visually, the EX40 aligns more closely with its larger siblings, the EX60 and EX90. In terms of pricing, the updated Volvo EX40 now starts at €47,490 in Germany. The longer-range P5 Long Range version is priced from €53,090, while the top-of-the-line P8 Performance AWD starts at €60,590.
Regarding the refreshed exterior design: one of the most striking updates at the front is the redesigned Volvo signature ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights. These now feature a more futuristic appearance in combination with the smooth front fascia and utilise Matrix LED technology. The grille, front bumper, bonnet, and front wings have also been revised, offering, according to the designers, “a new elegant interpretation of Volvo Cars’ Scandinavian design language.”. At the rear, the model features new LED taillights, a revised tailgate, and a redesigned bumper.
Further innovations involve the compact SUV’s safety systems, including a new automatic emergency steering assistant for evading hazards and an automatic emergency braking assistant. “These enhanced safety capabilities are made possible by a new advanced software and sensor platform,” Volvo said in a press release. “With new front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras, the car gains a more comprehensive view of its surroundings.”
Among the innovations in driver assistance systems is a ‘Door Opening Alert’, which warns occupants when opening doors if cyclists or vehicles are approaching from behind. Additionally, the optional Pilot Assist system is enhanced with a lane-changing assistant, and the optional 360° camera now includes a 3D view. Google Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, is also now on board.
Inside, Volvo has upgraded the cabin with a larger 11.2-inch screen and revised the menu system. The company also announces new premium materials and equipment options. Furthermore, regular over-the-air updates will ensure continuous improvements to the vehicles after delivery, providing new software and features.
For trim levels, Volvo offers four lines: Essential, Core, Plus, and Ultra. The latter two also each include a Black Edition. Pricing for the all-electric compact EX40 starts at €47,490 for the base P5 Electric. The Core trim is listed from €50,290, while the Plus and Plus Black Edition start at €52,990 and €54,290, respectively. The top trims, Ultra and Ultra Black Edition, are available from €59,290 and €60,590, respectively.
