Volkswagen pauses development of the ID.Golf

Volkswagen is temporarily pausing development work on the future ID.Golf. The automaker cites high cost pressure as the reason for the decision and plans to resume work as soon as the necessary investments can be secured.

Volkswagen has temporarily suspended development work on the electric ID.Golf. Brand chief Thomas Schäfer first announced the pause in an internal interview, as reported by _Handelsblatt_. The company has since officially confirmed the decision.

“We simply cannot afford this work right now,” Schäfer said, according to _Reuters_. The aim is to resume development as soon as possible. In its statement on the nine-month figures for the Brand Group Core, Volkswagen echoed this sentiment, noting that development work for the future ID.Golf is being temporarily paused “until we can securely allocate the necessary investments”.

The pause is part of a broader cost-saving programme. Volkswagen aims to tighten investment discipline, reduce upfront expenditures, and improve working capital to strengthen net cash flow.

In the Brand Group Core, net cash flow declined sharply in the first nine months of 2026: from €4.34 billion to €1.43 billion. The group’s revenue remained nearly stable at €106.4 billion, but operating profit fell from €4.72 billion to €4.33 billion. The operating return on sales decreased from 4.4 to 4.1 per cent.

ID.Golf remains a key SSP model

The core Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand is under particular pressure. Its operating profit fell from €1.48 billion to €813 million in the first nine months, with the operating return on sales standing at 1.3 per cent. Without taking special measures -such as restructuring, the planned sale of the Volkswagen Osnabrück plant, and the discontinuation of ID.4 production in Chattanooga – Volkswagen states the figure would have been 2.6 per cent.

Volkswagen currently faces a challenging position. While demand for electric vehicles is rising, the company notes that battery-electric vehicles have yet to achieve the margins of comparable internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. As a result, the share of less profitable electric vehicles is increasing, while the volume of more profitable ICE vehicles is declining.

Cost pressure is also high at the main Wolfsburg plant. According to _Reuters_, the plant is currently around €300 million behind its cost target for the year. In contrast, the Emden and Zwickau plants are on track to reduce their factory costs.

The development pause for the ID.Golf is particularly significant because the model is intended to be based on Volkswagen’s upcoming Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). The group-wide electric platform is designed to reduce technical complexity and costs, among other benefits. The electric Golf is planned for the early 2030s.

It remains unclear whether this timeline will be delayed by the current pause. The Volkswagen Works Council told _Reuters_ that any lost time could be made up. However, the employee representation views the spending freeze as another sign of the group’s strained financial situation.

Volkswagen explicitly describes the measure as temporary but has not yet specified when development work on the ID.Golf will resume.
