First rear-driven GTI promises to channel spirit of hot hatch forebears with 322bhp and dynamic chassis control

Volkswagen has revealed its most powerful GTI model ever with the launch of the ID.3 GTI.
Revealed to coincide with the famous GTI name’s 50th anniversary, the ID.3 GTI is a performance-focused take on the heavily revised ID.3 Neo and sits above the incoming ID. Polo GTI in Volkswagen’s electric hot hatch line-up.
It also replaces the disappointing ID.3 GTX, which was based on the pre-facelift model.
Volkswagen ID.3 GTI performance
Packing 322bhp and 402lb ft from a rear-mounted motor (a GTI first), the ID.3 GTI can sprint from 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 124mph. A launch control feature comes as standard to help deliver consistent performance off the line.
VW says its new electric hot hatch stays true to the original spirit of the GTI by offering flexibility, space and everyday usability alongside grin-inducing performance.
Central to that is the permanently available maximum torque and adaptive chassis which, VW says, combines with the low centre of gravity of an EV to deliver a “pure and dynamic GTI experience” that goes beyond straight line speed.
Like the related Cupra Born VZ, the new ID.3 GTI gets 15-stage adaptive damping thanks to the Dynamic Chassis Control system, and progressive steering. Both are controlled via selectable drive modes which include a special GTI setting that sets everything to full sportiness and activates a synthetic engine noise.
The GTI shares its 79kWh battery with the regular ID.3 and will deliver up to 373 miles of range. Peak DC charging of 183kW allows a 10-80% recharge in 29 minutes.
Volkswagen ID.3 GTI design
As befits any car wearing the famous GTI badge, the ID.3 has been given a makeover full of nods to the badge’s 50-year heritage.
Externally, the famous red stripe and GTI badge have been added above the light strip between the headlights. The GTI also gets new vertical light elements in the lower bumper, which has the traditional GTI honeycomb pattern incorporating two vivid red upright strips.
Every ID.3 GTI gets gloss black mirror caps and side trims, and new 20-inch alloy wheels named after the famous Wörthersee GTI meet in Austria. The new model will be sold in the traditional GTI colours of red, silver and black, along with grey and white options. Unlike the unloved GTX, which came with a black roof and spoiler as standard, these will be body-coloured on the new GTI for a sharper look.
Inside, the most obvious change is the new Superclark tartan seat fabric – a nod to the 1976 original. Elsewhere, the GTI takes the raft of ergonomic and functional improvements of the ID.3 Neo while adding specific elements such as a red stripe across the dashboard, and red stitching and a 12 o’clock marker on the steering wheel.
Volkswagen ID.3 GTI price and specification
UK price and specification for the ID.3 GTI are still to be announced but expect it to cost in the region of £45,000 to compete with the Cupra Born VZ and the upcoming high-performance version of the Audi A2.
Expect equipment levels to match the highest standard spec of ID.3 with the addition of the GTI design features and hardware. VW says that every option offered on the regular car – from a panoramic roof to a 480W Harman Kardon sound system and retractable tow bar will be available on the GTI as well.
With pre-sales due to start in Germany in early 2027, it’s likely to be at least the middle of next year before UK deliveries begin.
