Updated Geely EX5 now boasts world’s fastest charging at 2.2 megawatts

The updated Geely EX5 has undergone a series of changes in its home Chinese market, with 2,250-kilowatt charging, larger batteries, more powerful motors, and new tech.

A rival to the Škoda Elroq, the Renault Scenic E-Tech, and the Kia EV3, the Geely EX5 now benefits from the Chinese auto giant’s newly released ‘Smart Charging‘, which offers ultra-rapid charging speeds up to 2,250kW (2.2 megawatts).

The Smart Charging system is Geely’s response to BYD’s ‘Flash Charging’ tech, which is scheduled to make its way here in 2027. Geely’s setup significantly dwarfs BYD’s 1,500kW (1.5mW) output. The AI-based Smart Charging system means that the EX5 can be charged from 10-70% in just under nine minutes.

The updated Chinese-spec Geely EX5 comes with three battery choices: the entry-level 60.22kWh pack paired with a 215bhp electric motor, a mid-tier 61.25kWh unit, and a range-topping 70kWh pack. The latter two are paired with a 328bhp motor.

Unlike UK cars, which are exclusively front-wheel-drive (FWD), this latest version of Geely’s C-segment SUV now has its motor placed on the rear axle, making it rear-wheel-drive (RWD).

While torque is unchanged at 236 pound-feet, the EX5 can now do 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds, around a second quicker than the pre-facelift car. Geely’s decision to move the electric motor to the rear also increases frunk space to 160 litres. The boot’s capacity stands at 410L.

WLTP range has not been announced, but in China, the 70kWh EX5 offers up to 394 miles on a single charge on the country’s more lenient CLTC efficiency cycle. In the UK, the EX5 can manage up to 267 miles on a single charge from the single trim level offered.

When it comes to design, the facelifted Geely EX5 gets a mildly revised front bumper, while the LED headlights from the current car carry over. At the rear, the ‘Geely’ script is moved to the centre of the bootlid, à la Lexus and Škoda. Geely now offers the EX5 with a choice of either 18-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels.

In terms of tech, the roof-mounted LiDAR sensors allow for Level 3 autonomous driving, meaning the car can manage all basic driving functions, but the driver must resume control when the car’s safety systems require it. Following the Chinese government’s ban on electrically operated flush-fitting door handles, physical door handles will also make a comeback.
