Tesla Semi coming to the UK in 2027 with 1,100bhp and megawatt charging

US brand confirms European specification for its eHGV as it expands beyond the passenger car market

Tesla has revealed the first specification details for its Semi all-electric HGV as it prepares to launch in the UK and Europe.

The Tesla Semi made its European debut at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover, with the US EV specialist confirming that it will offer nearly 1,100bhp and around 340 miles of range.

The Semi was first revealed in 2017 and finally went into large-scale production in the US earlier this year. Now, Tesla says it will arrive in Europe and the UK in 2027.

Using an unconventional central driving position, the Semi won’t need to be adapted for the right-hand-drive market, speeding up its introduction to the UK. However, some adaptations from the US model have been made to meet with European regulations.

These include the deletion of its front light bar, the inclusion of digital wing mirrors and new bodywork around the rear wheels. However, the rear-hinged cab doors remain in place.

Unlike the US, where multiple variants are sold, Europe will get just one version of the Tesla Semi.

Tesla has confirmed this will use a three-motor powertrain to deliver up to 1,088bhp. It hasn’t confirmed the truck’s battery size yet, but said that it will deliver an estimated 342 miles of range and class-leading efficiency of 1m/kWh. That suggests it will be equipped with the smaller of the US model’s packs – a 548kWh unit.

Tesla says its eHGV will be able to replenish 60% of its range in just 30 minutes thanks to its Megacharger system, which can theoretically operate at up to 1,200kW. Tesla’s UK site, however, suggested this could be capped at 800kW here.

A new “Megacharging” network will apparently support the new Tesla Semi, using ultra-high-power chargers backed up by battery storage systems similar to BYD’s Flash Charging arrangement.

The Semi is estimated to weigh around 9,000kg, with a gross combination weight of 40 tonnes. When it arrives in Europe it will be going up against models including the Mercedes eActros and Volvo’s FH Aero Electric, which can manage up to 435 miles on a single charge.
