New generation MAN eTGX unveiled with 720 km range

MAN presents the new MAN eTGX, which significantly improves its range with enhanced aerodynamics, higher recuperation, and a new battery generation. Also on display at the IAA Transportation is an electric version of the TGE transporter, developed with Swiss company, Flux.

Munich-based commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN released a total of 15 press releases for the IAA Transportation (15 to 20 September in Hanover), of which the eTGX stands out. Just under two years after the first customer delivery of the all-electric long-haul truck at the Porsche plant in Leipzig, MAN has now revised the model.

Among the many innovations, the increased range is particularly exciting — thanks to improved aerodynamics and, above all, a new battery generation. As a tractor unit, the MAN eTGX could previously carry a maximum of six battery packs, each with 89 kWh gross and 80 kWh net capacity — totalling a maximum of 534 kWh gross or 480 kWh net. With the new battery generation, each pack in the new MAN eTGX can now store 92 kWh gross and 88 kWh net. Proportionally, MAN is now releasing significantly more net capacity from the gross figure, at around 95 per cent. The NMC cell chemistry remains unchanged, and MAN continues to assemble the batteries itself at its plant in Nuremberg.

Additionally, a seventh battery pack can now be accommodated in the tractor unit, which was previously only possible in the chassis. However, this is only feasible in the MAN eTGX with a 6×2 axle configuration for the tractor unit (six wheels, two of which are driven). Up to six packs remain possible with a 4×2 tractor unit (four wheels, two of which are driven). The requirement for three axles in the heaviest battery configuration with seven packs is related to the payload and axle load.

MAN eTGX with up to 616 kWh net battery capacity

The new battery setup leads to greater range. According to the manufacturer, the new MAN eTGX 6×2 tractor unit, with 644 kWh gross / 616 kWh net battery capacity, achieves a range of up to 720 kilometres, with “over 600 kilometres typical range under everyday long-haul conditions realistically achievable,” as MAN states. With this maximum range, the MAN eTGX even surpasses the recently introduced new Volvo FH Aero Electric 6×2, for which the manufacturer specifies 700 kilometres and which has since been considered the European range champion among electric trucks.

Other configurations also see a range increase: For the typical 4×2 tractor unit of the MAN eTGX, the company initially quoted a daily range of 500 kilometres at the premiere of the first generation, with specifications later mentioning up to 570 kilometres (likely under ideal conditions). Now, in the new generation, the range increases significantly: For the 4×2 tractor unit with six batteries and a total capacity of 552 kWh gross / 528 kWh net, the range rises to up to 660 kilometres, with “well over 500 kilometres under real-world conditions in typical long-haul operations” expected.

So much for the battery innovations. The increased range of the MAN eTGX is not only due to the batteries but also to regenerative braking improved by up to 20 per cent, as well as an enhanced design. This includes a vehicle front extended forward by 120 millimetres, which MAN states efficiently utilises the EU length regulations for zero-emission vehicles to optimise aerodynamics and safety.

Major step forward for long-haul transport

“With the new MAN eTGX, we are taking the next major step on the path to decarbonising long-haul transport. The combination of a new battery generation, even greater range, megawatt charging, and a vehicle design consistently focused on efficiency creates tangible economic added value for our customers in daily operations. At the same time, we are improving direct visibility and thus safety for all road users,” says Alexander Vlaskamp, Chairman of the Executive Board of MAN Truck & Bus in Germany.

By megawatt charging, Vlaskamp refers to the fact that MAN has been offering the eTGX—even in its previous generation—with MCS connectors as standard since July. This enables a charging power of 750 kW, while the eTGX charges at 375 kW with standard CCS connectors.

Near-series electric transporter TGE Electrified unveiled

Moving from the top to the lower end of MAN’s portfolio: At IAA Transportation, the brand from the Traton Group is also showcasing two near-series innovation vehicles electrified in partnership with Flux from Switzerland. Both are based on the TGE transporter, which has so far only been available with internal combustion engines — a sister model to the Crafter from Traton parent company Volkswagen.

In collaboration with Flux, both vehicles were developed for specialised applications requiring, among other things, a higher gross vehicle weight, all-wheel drive, and electric auxiliary drives. These include emergency services, fire brigades, and municipal operations that have previously had limited electrification options.

The two vehicles showcased in Hanover have a permissible gross weight of 4.0 and 5.5 tonnes, respectively. This provides a payload of up to 2,500 kilograms (for the 5.5-tonne version) and a towing capacity of up to 3,500 kilograms. The installed battery with 119 kWh gross capacity enables ranges of up to 480 kilometres and DC fast charging at up to 140 kW. This allows a fast-charging session from 10 to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes.

“The presentation at IAA Transportation demonstrates how we are advancing electrification even for particularly demanding transport and special applications. Our goal is to offer customers practical solutions with high operational capability. Together with our development partner Flux, we gain important insights from direct exchange with customers,” summarised Daniel Holbein, Head of Business Unit Van at MAN, in Germany.

In parallel, MAN is already working with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles on the next generation of the MAN eTGE, which was discontinued in 2024. According to MAN, the collaboration with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles remains a central component of the TGE’s product development across all drive types. However, a new MAN eTGE is likely to arrive at the same time as the new Volkswagen e-Crafter, probably not until 2028.
