Hyundai recalls Ioniq 9 over power-folding rear seat risk

Hyundai is recalling 5,360 Ioniq 9 eSUVs in the US from the 2026 model year. The manufacturer states that the second-row power seats may fail to detect an occupant and continue moving, potentially trapping a person in the rear of the vehicle.

The recall covers certain 2026 model-year Ioniq 9s in the Limited, Calligraphy, or Calligraphy Design trims. Recall documentation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that the seats may continue moving after coming into contact with a person during powered functions such as automatic folding and stowing.

During a three-month investigation, Hyundai reportedly identified an issue with the anti-pinch functionality of the second-row seats following five consumer complaints relating to the issue, including two reports of minor injuries.

The recall takes the form of an OTA software update that changes the logic controlling the seats’ occupant detection and anti-pinch protection. Hyundai dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and install updated Seat Controller software free of charge. Vehicles enrolled in Hyundai’s Bluelink service can alternatively receive the update over the air.

Until the repairs have been completed, Hyundai has warned owners to exercise caution when operating the second-row power-seat functions. It specifically advises keeping children away from the rear seating area while the power-folding function is being operated.

This is the third recall issued for the Ioniq 9 in the US this year, following earlier recalls over a high-voltage battery bus bar and rear suspension fasteners.
