Gridserve and Voltloader expand public eHGV charging network

UK charging network Gridserve is expanding its partnership with electric haulier Voltloader. The deal will give Voltloader access to dedicated public eHGV charging hubs and preferential rates across key freight routes.

Gridserve and Voltloader have agreed to expand public charging access for electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) in the UK. Voltloader will add Gridserve’s Electric Freightway network to its existing national network of depot-based chargers.

The Electric Freightway was initially developed as part of the UK’s Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme. gridserve has since continued to expand the network, with dedicated eHGV charging infrastructure now available at Extra Baldock, Moto Exeter and Moto Tamworth, as well as the Markham Vale and Stevenage Electric Forecourts.

Six more eHGV charging hubs are planned to open by the first quarter of 2027. The sites are intended to provide charging along key UK freight routes and complement depot-based infrastructure.

Under the new agreement, Voltloader will receive preferential charging rates while gaining access to gridserve’s ultra-rapid charging hubs. gridserve, in turn, will gain further operational insight into how public charging can support the day-to-day requirements of commercial freight operators.

The two companies say the partnership will provide further real-world evidence for the use of public charging infrastructure in commercial electric haulage. In the ZEHID programme, operational data indicated that a single electric HGV could avoid around 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions by 2034 compared with a diesel equivalent.
