Charging at 710 kW: Mercedes-AMG unveils GT SUV

With the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, the second production model based on the electric AMG.EA platform is launching - and it is by no means inferior to the first model, the GT 4-Door Coupé. On the contrary, AMG has even improved on one important technical aspect.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé set the benchmark, and now the AMG GT SUV is raising it even higher. Both models use the AMG.EA architecture and thus feature 800-volt technology. The drivetrain consists of three particularly high-performance axial flux motors, which, in the top-end version of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SUV, can deliver a peak output of 860 kW. This enables the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and reach 200 km/h in just 6.8 seconds. The top speed for all variants is 250 km/h, or electronically limited to 270 km/h with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.

The continuous output is 530 kW, and the maximum torque reaches 2,000 Nm. To prevent thermal power loss, the battery consists of directly cooled round cells and features active thermal management. This system enables a very high power density and ensures sustained and consistent power delivery. The front-axle motor serves as a booster motor, engaging for additional power or traction at the front axle.

Up to this point, the technology is identical. However, when it comes to maximum charging power, the GT 4-Door Coupé must concede defeat: the GT SUV does not charge at around 600 kW but at up to 710 kW at a correspondingly equipped fast-charging station.

This allows the optional 128 kWh battery (106 kWh standard) to absorb enough energy in ten minutes for an additional 454 km of range. A full charge (10 to 80 per cent in 16 minutes at a 400 kW charger) enables the electric AMG SUV to travel up to 700 km. The large battery and an excellent drag coefficient of 0.27 for an SUV make this possible. AMG states the WLTP consumption of the top version as 23.8 to 21.2 kWh per 100 km.

The Mercedes-AMG 55 SUV also impresses with 530 kW of continuous output, but its peak power of 600 kW places it at a respectful distance from the 63. The maximum torque of 1,860 Nm is also slightly lower. No other differences are found in the spec sheet. The sprint to 100 km/h takes 2.8 seconds here.

The Mercedes-AMG 53 SUV is technically more modest: it features a permanently excited synchronous motor at the front and rear axles, delivering 270 kW of continuous power and a maximum peak of 400 kW. The maximum torque is 800 Nm, and the sprint time increases by another second to 3.8 seconds. The 106 kWh battery charges at a maximum of 600 kW and requires 16 minutes to go from 10 to 80 per cent at a 400 kW charger. It gains 440 km of range in ten minutes, and the combined maximum range is 668 km.

The first SUV “born in Affalterbach”

All versions of the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV share the full-size body, which gives the vehicle a length of 5.08 metres, a width of 2.00 metres, and a height of 1.66 metres. To keep its kerb weight of up to 2,695 kilograms under control even during spirited driving, AMG has equipped its first in-house developed SUV with the newly developed AMG Active Ride Control+ suspension. This offers high camber and toe stiffness, including pitch and roll stabilisation (standard in the 63, optional for the 55).

The suspension is designed to strike an optimal balance between comfortable travel and highly dynamic driving. In addition, there is the fully variable all-wheel drive, rear-axle steering, and the execution of the roof spoiler and air guidance panels as active aerodynamic components in the AMG GT 63 and 55 SUVs. These reduce air resistance up to 150 km/h and regulate cooling. At higher speeds, the system intervenes more quickly to improve traction and stability, thereby enhancing driving safety.

The AMG Race Engineer control system expands the adjustment options for the suspension and drivetrain. Using three physical rotary controls in the centre console (_Response_, _Agility_, and _Traction Control_), the responsiveness of the electric motor, agility in corners, and wheel slip can be adjusted continuously and individually.

Driver-oriented cockpit with extensive race-track functions

With its sporty seating position in the interior and the large storage space of 1,740 litres in the boot and 78 litres in the frunk, AMG aims to combine the qualities of an SUV with the feel of a sports car. To enhance this feeling, AMG has equipped its performance SUV with engine sounds in the AMG Force Sport+ driving programme. There is a choice between an AMG V8 engine and an AMG six-cylinder engine, including simulated gear shifts, seat shakers, and a matching display design.

The three-part display landscape, based on MB.OS, combines a 10.2-inch combination instrument with a slightly angled 14.0-inch central display and a separate 14-inch passenger screen. High-quality materials such as diamond stitching, floating armrests, and optional stainless-steel trim for the Burmester 4D sound system characterise the cabin. The ambience is further enhanced by a switchable panoramic glass roof and extensive customisation options for seatbelts, wheels, and paint finishes.

Functionally, the overall system covers a broad spectrum between everyday and race-track use via MBUX with three integrated AI agents. Seven specific driving programmes – from Comfort and Eco to Race, including a boost function via the steering-wheel paddles—adapt the vehicle’s characteristics. For track use, specialised submenus and the AMG Track Pace telemetry software provide detailed real-time analyses. The performance features are complemented by the Predictive Performance Manager (PPM), which can control the energy flow in a section-specific manner to ensure constant lap times and maximum efficiency even under extreme conditions.
