Apartment and condo residents could get more places to plug in their EVs without their buildings needing a costly electrical upgrade. LAZ Parking and EverCharge are launching a charging service that shares available power among vehicles – an approach the companies say can support up to five times as many charging ports on the same power supply.

The new service, LAZ Multifamily EV Charging Powered by EverCharge SmartPower, is available across LAZ’s US-wide footprint. EverCharge is a wholly owned subsidiary of indiGOtech, which goes by GO.

For anyone who lives in an apartment or condo, getting a charger installed can involve more than just choosing a parking space. The apartment building’s electrical capacity has to accommodate EV charging, and upgrading the infrastructure can make the project expensive before anyone plugs in.

EverCharge’s SmartPower manages charging output in real time based on how much electricity vehicles need and how much power the site has available. That gives property owners a way to install more chargers within their existing electrical limits, the company says.

The approach spreads the available power across charging vehicles as demand changes. The potential benefit is that more residents can plug in where they already park, with less need for expensive electrical work.

LAZ operates around 2.1 million parking spaces at 5,700 locations in the US and Canada. EverCharge already operates more than 10,000 charging ports at over 1,000 apartment and condo properties, serving more than 50,000 registered drivers.

LAZ says the venture expands its charging network to 25,000 ports across North America. That figure describes its expanded network; the announcement doesn’t set a target or timeline for new apartment and condo installations.

The rollout will use EverCharge’s EVO3 Level 2 chargers. The companies haven’t disclosed resident charging prices or named the first properties getting installations. Beyond residential charging, they also plan to explore charging and battery swapping for commercial fleets, ride-hailing, and delivery services.
