BMW has revealed the new fully electric iX4, introducing its third Neue Klasse model and expanding the German automaker's next-generation EV lineup with a sportier SUV coupe alternative. The new iX4 combines the company's latest electric vehicle architecture, advanced software platform, and distinctive coupe-inspired styling, while promising up to 428 miles of estimated range and ultra-fast 400 kW charging capability.
Set to launch in March 2027 as the BMW iX4 50 xDrive, the model will be followed by the performance-focused BMW iX4 M60 xDrive later in the year. BMW positions the vehicle as a more emotional and design-led interpretation of its Neue Klasse philosophy, blending the practicality of an SUV with the proportions and silhouette of a coupe.
The iX4 adopts BMW's latest minimalist Neue Klasse design language, featuring a streamlined profile, short overhangs, pronounced wheel arches, and a sweeping roofline. A full-length panoramic glass roof comes as standard, while every version of the vehicle includes the M Sport package, giving the electric crossover a more aggressive appearance from launch. BMW says aerodynamic measures contribute to a drag coefficient of 0.23, helping maximize efficiency.
At the top of the range, the iX4 M60 xDrive introduces BMW M-inspired exterior styling, unique lighting signatures, and an M-specific rear spoiler. The model is powered by dual electric motors producing up to 603 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph sprint in an estimated 3.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 149 mph.
The standard iX4 50 xDrive also employs a dual-motor all-wheel-drive layout, delivering 463 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. BMW estimates a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds. A 112.2 kWh battery supports a projected driving range of up to 428 miles, placing the model among the longest-range electric SUVs in its segment.
Charging technology is a major focus for the new vehicle. Built on an 800-volt electrical architecture, the iX4 can charge at rates of up to 400 kW. According to BMW, this enables the addition of up to 184 miles of range in just 10 minutes, while charging from 10% to 80% requires approximately 21 minutes under ideal conditions.
The model introduces BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology, which incorporates newly developed cylindrical battery cells with a claimed 20% increase in volumetric energy density compared to the company's previous battery generation. BMW has also adopted a cell-to-pack battery design and a structural battery integration concept that helps reduce weight while increasing body rigidity.
Inside, BMW debuts its latest digital cockpit architecture. The system combines BMW Panoramic Vision, an available 3D Head-Up Display, a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, and BMW Operating System X. The software platform is designed around a software-defined vehicle architecture and supports extensive over-the-air updates.
Artificial intelligence plays a significant role in the user experience. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has been enhanced with Amazon Alexa+ technology and generative AI capabilities, allowing drivers to interact with the vehicle through more natural conversations. The assistant can control vehicle functions, retrieve information, manage navigation tasks, and provide proactive suggestions based on driving habits and context.
BMW is also expanding in-car entertainment. Through BMW Digital Premium, owners gain access to a growing portfolio of apps, video streaming services, and games. Amazon Prime Video is scheduled to join the platform in the second half of 2026, while AirConsole and Boosteroid services bring cloud gaming and multiplayer experiences to the vehicle.
On the driving dynamics front, the iX4 introduces the new "Heart of Joy" control system, one of four computing platforms that underpin the Neue Klasse architecture. BMW says the system operates up to ten times faster than previous vehicle control units and manages propulsion, braking, charging, energy recuperation, and steering functions. The company claims the technology improves precision, reduces the need for corrective interventions, and enables smoother regenerative braking, often eliminating the need to use conventional friction brakes during normal driving.
Driver assistance has also been upgraded through BMW Symbiotic Drive, a new suite of SAE Level 2 technologies designed to allow more natural interaction between human drivers and automated systems. Features include attentive hands-free highway driving at speeds of up to 85 mph, advanced lane-keeping assistance, improved collision avoidance functions, and AI-supported parking technologies.
Another notable addition is bidirectional charging capability. BMW says future Gen6 electric vehicles, including the iX4, will be able to function as mobile energy storage units, supporting vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-home applications through compatible charging equipment.
The BMW iX4 50 xDrive will start at $66,200 before destination and handling charges. Production will take place at BMW Group Plant Debrecen in Hungary, the same facility responsible for the Neue Klasse iX3.
With the iX4, BMW is extending its Neue Klasse strategy beyond traditional SUV and sedan formats, targeting buyers who want a more design-focused electric crossover without sacrificing range, charging speed, or technology. As competition intensifies in the premium EV segment, the iX4 represents one of the brand’s most comprehensive showcases yet of the technologies that will define BMW's electric future.
